Yes they are. But Americans have forgotten their existence.
Marjorie taylor Greene has strongly implied she resigned her seat because of death threats. It seems possible Romney chose not to run again because of death threats...
The story I re-shared is by CBS, and it may be a relic of the pre-Ellison/Weiss era. Here's a summer-of-'25 piece about the same thing. It's not that there's no coverage; it's just that there isn't the kind of coverage that makes a sufficient impact or leads to change.
(Someone once told me the reason Mitt Romney was able to be somewhat independent as a Republican in the Senate was that he could afford fantastic security for himself and his family. And there have been some overview-pieces but it's still not part of the discourse the way it should be.)
I wish some major media outlets would do broad reports on the impact of death threats on our politics, and on who's doing them (MAGA men mostly from what I can tell), and why law enforcement appears to be doing so little about them. They are such a big (submerged) part of our politics now.
Thank you.
I was a big Fetterman fan - though I thought he would've been a better governor than senator. Didn't seem like a policy guy, did seem like someone who could run the state and who understood what people wanted.
Top-10 in my List Of People I Was Wrong About.
I grew up in primo Fetterman territory in central PA. I thought he was a breath of fresh air, but he also seemed just a little too performative. Like, real working class guys from PA wear their one suit when they go to an important event. They don’t wear a hoodie.
I think it’s genuine in both cases, but like all identities, it’s also kind of a performance too. Not all white working class guys get Nazi tattoos, but if you’re a downwardly mobile Hotchkiss guy, then you might *think* that’s what it looks like to be a white working class guy.
To be more specific, Fetterman and Platner’s white working class coded masculinity feels like a sensibility that’s especially alluring to someone who feels like they’re not living up to what a “successful” man in their family should be. So they become the authentic salt of the earth guy.
One shouldn’t be deterministic about this, people’s bios are all different, but sons of privilege and entitlement living lives of less privilege can develop flavors of populism that can be more or less inclusive and healthy.
Feels relevant that both Fetterman and Platner were/are downwardly mobile sons of the white upper-middle class. That can nurture a distinctly different bundle of resentments than are usually found in products of working or middle class households.
I used to kid that he has pictures. But after the Epstien files…he probably does.
Yeah. Haven’t heard from them since early Saturday morning. I say it is hard. Can’t afford to acknowledge how hard or I won’t be able to keep it together.
