At their wedding, the cake is called Love. (10/10)

Pez sweeps back into Henry’s flat. He hands him a paper bag filled with flaky, buttery croissants and says, “Alex doesn’t have magic. He calls his bakes those darling names because, when he was little, he dreamed of love like a fairytale. Go and be his Prince Charming, Hazza.” (9/10)

So, Pez goes to the bakery to investigate. His trip is enlightening in many ways: firstly, June Claremont-Díaz. Secondly: June is the one with the gift, not Alex. The crystals and tinctures and sage are all hers; flour and sugar and butter are what Alex makes magic with. (8/10)

When he sees Pez the next day, he can’t muster up his usual energy. Knowing Henry’s sweet tooth, especially when he’s sad, Pez tries to talk him into going to the bakery, but Henry digs his heels in; refuses to embarrass himself in front of Alex again. (7/10)

It’s not a coincidence that he’s been happier ever since he discovered the bakery — he’s been speaking each feeling into existence. Every lingering glance, every spark when his hand brushed Alex’s over the counter. It was all fake. A product of Alex’s magic. (6/10)

One day, he’s speaking with Alex’s sister, and finds out that she and Alex co-own not just the bakery, but the apothecary next door. It’s not until she’s explaining about her family’s magic that the names of each pastry hit Henry. He’s heard tales of old, knows the power of a name. (5/10)

Comfort: a huge slice of tres leches cake. Flirt: raspberry and rose choux buns. Crush: pain au chocolat with orange and almond frangipane. That one reminds Henry of a jaffa cake; the next morning, Alex seems oddly keen to know whether Henry liked it. (4/10)

Henry returns to the bakery most mornings, trying something new each day on Alex’s suggestion. Joy: a fruit tart, topped with strawberries that burst on his tongue. Luck: éclairs filled with smooth creme patissiere and topped with salted caramel. (3/10)

The man behind the counter has a smile like sunshine that warms Henry from the inside out. They chat a little about the bakes while Alex — according to his name tag — puts brioche and lemon tarts in a bag for Henry. He’s buoyant all the way home. (2/10)

Henry knows that baking is not his forte, but he hasn’t seen Bea and Pez in forever, so he wants to do something special to mark the occasion.

It…well. It all goes a little bit wrong, until he panic dashes to the new bakery down the block and it all goes a little bit right. (1/10)

This is the perfect opportunity to come clean, but it is also the worst possible timing. This place is exceeding maximum occupancy. The last thing Henry wants to do is waste Alex’s time. Even placing a different order under the guise of ‘trying something new’ would take far longer than just— “The usual, please.” Or: After Henry gets coffee for Pez, Alex assumes that’s Henry’s usual, and he memorizes the order as a way to shoot his shot. Four times Henry doesn’t correct him and one time he does.
