New year, new editors, new research to share from the Journal of Applied Biomechanics!
Our first 2026 issue features work by PanoโRodriguez, Ducas, Vadez, and Abboud on how DOMS alters median frequency patterns in the lumbar erector spinae.
We're about to kick off 2026 with a ๐งจ๐ฅ

New in JAB by Lukas Krumpl et al. !
High-intensity interval running acutely decreased plantar fascia thickness and stiffness, with recovery toward baseline after 30 minutes of rest. The results highlight the load-sensitive, viscoelastic response of the plantar fascia.

A ChatGPT diagram of a skull with some weird labels. The lower jaw is both the mandible and the occipital bone. Also, the nasal cavity is between two teeth!
Given all the recent buzz about how great ChatGPT has gotten, including its prowess with images, I figured I'd check in on its anatomical skills. Nope.
The Department of Kinesiology at Penn State is inviting applications for an open-rank faculty position in sensorimotor control and rehabilitation neuroscience. Please share this opportunity with interested colleagues in your network.

A new study by Ling Li et al. in the Journal of Applied Biomechanics shows that removing both vision and knowledge of landing height significantly alters landing mechanics and may raise ACL injury risk.

What TUesdays look like around here. ๐ค ๐ #TigerTUesday
No sleep, way too much coffee, and definitley a sweat stained suitโฆ but it was all worth it for this week.
First day of teaching as faculty, first first-author paper, and a successful dissertation defense.
Dr. McCandless will be taking the long weekend for R&R, and then it's the tenure grind!
Please repost!
We have an open rank, tenure-line faculty position in biomechanics in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. At U-M we have great colleagues, exceptional resources, and biomechanics can be found all across the campus. #BiomechSky
Good gag on FB:
Doctor: I'm sorry, but we had to remove your colon.
Me Why?
Today is my first, official, #TigerTUesday as a faculty member at @towsonu.bsky.social . So of course we had to do it right! ๐ฏ
New in JAB! Davenport et al. show that symmetrical, below-the-waist lifts produce higher joint forces in the low back & knee than asymmetrical lifts.
What does this mean for injury prevention and assistive tech design in industrial settings?

Our hearts are with the people of Ruidoso following the devastating floods that have taken lives & damaged homes & communities.
As a land-grant institution, NMSU stands with all New Mexicans in times of crisis. We are committed to supporting those affectedโthrough action, compassion & community.โฅ๏ธ
We're hiring!
Heath Henninger and I are hiring a research engineer to support two new new grants. Responsibilities will include developing new devices for gait perturbations and supporting biomechanical data collections.

Newly published in JAB! Ting Wang et al. saw that arm-reaching during aerial basketball plays increases lower-limb injury risk by causing stiffer landings and more knee abduction.
What strategies would you use to train safer landings?

New research by Hรฉbert-Losier et al. shows that cadence affects calf raise test metrics like peak height and power, but not number of repetitions. These findings underscore the need to standardize cadence in clinical and research use. What cadence do you prefer when using the calf raise test?
When my people hear that I run ultras, they always ask,โWhat do you think about the whole time youโre out there?โ
So I made this Sopranos x Ultra-running meme as a solid representation of my self-talk strategy in between aid stations.๐

Host a teach in. Share science with your community....protest style! Calling back to the teach ins of 1965, we are taking to parks, pubs, & churches to tell our neighborhoods about how the budget cuts will impact them.
Our goal is to have 1000 SUFS Teach Ins across the US, by 9/30.
*GASP* ๐ฎ
We know, it's a big goal.
If you've received tax dollars for your science, you have a responsibility to inform *your* community what is at stake: public health, the economy, innovation, and America's global leadership.
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3
