Here's a draft manuscript of the Magic: The Gathering roleplaying game from 1996, and I've giving it away as a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood, with permission from the authors. Not sure how much to ask for. Vanishingly rare. $1,872 raised so far. #mtg #ttrpg

Can't even scroll instagram funny animal videos now, at least half are AI slop. :(

I hate the people who've made it so I can't go a single day without being annoyed or inconvenienced in some way by AI. I hate AI pushers for the big problems AI causes, but I also hate them for making EVERY SINGLE DAY a little bit worse than it would've been if they weren't oozing slop everywhere.

Trump isn't the kind of person who has any clue what an action will lead to. He's never wondered what an action will lead to. He's an ideas guy with other people implementing his ideas, in this instance, a group of sycophants who's only ability to hold onto power and avoid reckoning is to say yes.

on her wheel properly, or if I need to make adjustments, I'll decide how to do any more.

Yeh I was conscious that the ends would have some reasonably thin sections with weak grain direction, also, sanding the endgrain is always a pain. Also, screwing up the first one at the last minute would have been harder if I'd had three separate bits ;) It was fun though, and when I know if it fits

Nice! Did you do two part turning, with dowel and separate ends, or turn as one spindle piece? I turned as a single spindle, but probably a lot easier to do repeats if I had done it as separates.

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

Kids have gay families.
Some kids are gay.
Gay is not a taboo subject that must be discussed in hushed voices behind closed doors, lest it scar a child’s soul.

Scrubbing gay content is shoving us back in the closet. It’s priming America to treat gay people the way we’re treating trans people.

A friend of my wife has several wheels, and recently bought another very old one which only came with one bobbin. I'm no expert, but she said only having one bobbin was a pain, and could I make a new one for her!

A photograph showing two wooden bobbins, for a spinning wheel, on a paper towel. The bobbin on the left is the original, the bobbin on the right is one I have just finished turning on my lathe. It's not quite identical but it's pretty close. The bobbins have two ends connected with a long spindle. The ends are rounded with a v-groove and flat disc at one end, and a small nub at the other. Not shown, is an 8mm hole drilled through the centre.

Second attempt went much better. Not sure what the critical dimension on a spinning wheel bobbin is, but will give this to the owner and see if it works.

Never miss a chance to tell my favourite science joke:

Q: What did Crick & Watson discover?

A: Rosalind Franklin’s lab book.

Yeh, and as happens a lot, I got an almost catch and thought oooh, lucky. And then put the tool back in at the same angle thinking 'I'll just control it better' and it instantly skidded gouging the wood, because doing the same thing over and over deserves to be punished!

A picture showing an almost complete spinning wheel bobbin turned on a lathe, ruined at the last moment by a catch causing a gouge across one end.

Two years ago, a bowl this size would have taken 5-8 hours to get to this stage, over two days. This bowl is about 40 minutes of work so far.

A photograph of a wooden bowl, still attached to the lathe. The bowl is pictured from the front, has a wide rim and a fairly shallow bowl. The wood is walnut, and it this unfinished state is very light in colour overall, with slightly darker lines following the growth rings.

Spent the morning at the Midlands Woodworking Show buying some lovely bits of wood, then turned this from a piece of Walnut I already had. I knew it had cracks, I hoped they would turn out but alas not.

If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kākāpō chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!
