I'd love to talk to prospective postdocs who are thinking about the role of land in the climate system about applying! If that's you please reach out!

Postdoc Fellowship opportunity! UW Program on Climate Change has a new for a Postdoctoral Scholar program for fellows to develop and conduct novel climate science research that benefits from collaborations at UW. Apply by April 15th! pcc.uw.edu/research/fun...
Agree on TCRE and ZEC framing. For ZEC and what it represents maybe Koven et al 2023 ERL

The landscape of jobs that value climate science training is changing fast! You can find some profiles from the earth science womenβs network here, probably with a research heavy skew n0o.15a.myftpupload.com/our-members/...
The Land Model and Biogeochemistry working groups at NCAR have their meetings Tu-Th this week, and you can join virtually! Register (free) to get the link to join and find the agenda of talks here: www.cesm.ucar.edu/events/worki...
I have a distinct memory of watching biathlon in a prior Olympics and the commentator said the Norwegian team had 23 wax technicians (!).
Time to show them Portlandia?

We didnβt know where it was yet when I was in grad school!
Someone without a science degree or any science research experience nominated to be in charge of NSF.
Need more industries to speak up against the attacks on NCAR.

Last December, weather and climate scientists sat down with us to tell us why they loved the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and why it benefits us all. Last night, the NSF began dismantling it. Listen to what they have to say, and why it's urgent that we #SaveNCAR wclivestream.com/act
The NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center was created to protect us against extreme weather and climate change. Now it's being transferred to an unknown "third party": www.nytimes.com/2026/02/13/c... Tell Congress and the NSF to stop the transfer and #SaveNCAR wclivestream.com/act youtu.be/pT8dCoZgH_M
The American Academy of Actuaries warns that dismantling NCAR would degrade the catastrophe models insurers depend on to price climate riskβdriving up premiums and threatening coverage availability nationwide.

I think we havenβt quantified all the things the land carbon sink might do yet. And the land carbon cycles in ESMs are quite linear but are missing a number of processes which could be quite non-linear.
I donβt publish that many papers so Iβm more than meeting this metric. But I get >3 review requests each week, sometimes more. So Iβm still declining a large % of the requestsβ¦ I feel like editors are possibly frustrated with me, but with so many journals requesting they canβt see the whole picture.
adding a relevant point: this is true if the temperature adjustment after zero emissions is close to zero (which as far as we can tell so far it seems to be). I think we have a conceptual understanding that it is zero from an emergent balance between carbon and heat, but not a good theory for why.
Figure showing cumulative fossil fuel emissions on the x-axis and global mean surface temperature on the y-axis. The data is plotted for 1850-2024 and show a very linear relationship.
There is a very linear relationship between cumulative fossil fuel emissions vs. global mean surface air temperature from 1850-2024.
I saw that too π
Students applying for NSF funding are having their applications βreturned without reviewβ for being βineligible,β despite their proposed research falling squarely within the application guidelines. eos.org/research-and...
I agree with @benmsanderson.bsky.social ! Unfortunately Iβm not sure that there is an easy list of which model versions exactly have active BGC beyond those that did C4MIP or table 5.4 from AR6.
Only about 12 ESMs ran emissions driven simulations in CMIP6. Some number more have active biogeochemistry, but not all.
I was on two. One invited π«£ (Iβm not the lead tho)

Russoβs in Watertown!
I find the shops where you can buy spices from bulk bins are generally a better deal but not sure about saffron specifically. Have you been to russos yet? Canβt reminder if they have bulk spices but they have great vegetables.
Doesnβt sound like the person sending the email was an atmospheric scientist themselves though?
I've seen several Big Climate Accountsβ’ post about how the recent winter storm was made worse by climate change. It's a convenient narrative.

But what is "worse"? Colder temperatures? More snow? More freezing rain? Is there any primary literature supporting the idea of worse snowstorms?
