What can biodiversity patterns during the Black Death tell us about our relationships with nature?
(hint: its not all bad!)

Eryngium yuccifolium
Good morning everyone!
Itโs good to hear birds singing again in the morning. And the male goldfinches are changing from their subdued winter coloring to their bright summer yellow again.
These are pods of Rattlesnake Master, a plant that thrives in dry prairies.
Have a good day!
Yes ! Thats the smell!! Lol
I can't ever remember the damn name though lol but its pungent the way Jasmine and Gardenia are, a light honey-floral fragrance that wafts 50+yds away on a breeze. Tolerates shade, and grows into attractive 4X4ft bush. I think any plant, that makes people excited about plants, is a good thing
There aren't a set list of "Harm Reduction Ecology " plants, but the premise is- non problematic plants who's only benefit is aesthetic, aren't "bad" which feels like a very noncontroversial position but ๐คทโโ๏ธ This smells DIVINE and blooms in late Feb/Early March. I love it, and is a perfect example
"There Will Come Soft Rains" Sara Teasdale 1884 โ1933 (War Time) There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white, Robins will wear their feathery fire Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone.

the "lost" species Monarda mexicana is still out there! Known from just 2 historical collections (most recent from the 1950s). Imagine my joy in stumbling on a picture of it on @inaturalist.bsky.social !!! We've now documented the first known modern populations and revived the species name:
I. Objective enough to know there are people suffering in this world who would kill to only have "my problems"- and that "bad days" are just that, always tomorrow, blah blah .. ๐ฎโ๐จ im so tired.
When it rains it pours. Catch a break
Fml.
My transmission in the only family vehicle, that also doubles as my GardenWild transportation, just went out in the middle of morning traffic. I've never wished "giving up" were a viable option more than atm. Its 2m35F , raining, & in walking w/ no coat
Reminder that a total lunar eclipse will begin around 3:44 AM and peak around 6:30 AM tomorrow morning. ๐๐๐๐๐
Semi-close-up of a cluster of penstemon seedheads with snow on top of them
These goth beardtongue seedheads looked great in the snow today. Theyโre eaither penstemon digitalis or penstemon hirsutus; I have a mix of both.
This photo is part of my ongoing quest to appreciate the beauty in the non-blossom parts of the garden.

Main branch also has the memory lab where you can convert VHSs and other media to digital files.
Libraries are so fuckin cool.
I DID read the RVA library had a seed program, i was somehow equally surprised/notaurprised to learn the county ones did not lol
RVA libraries do the notary service too (not sure of th details). And the main branch has a seed library too.
If you happen to hear something reminiscent of monkeys calling to each other in our area , theres a good chance it's a Barred Owl trying to get a potential mate's attention, definitely impressive vocal action lol
Libraries are f*cking awesome. ๐
Idk if RVA does (though assume they do๐ค) but Chesterfield county locations all also offer free Notary if the Public! There's even a lazer cutter and 3d printer at one location wkth free courses on hoe to use both... which... I find freaking awesome. I really want to get a free seed-share going too
Guess what dude I CAN just buy some seeds and go plant native flowers in my front yard AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME.

What an absolute CHODE. ๐ค๐ wild.

Anybody who has tried to take photos in the perpetual twilight of the tropical forest understory knows how frustrating it can be.
This is where you need an artist.
