If we continue to let out-of-touch executives make out-of-touch decisions, this industry is going to look unrecognizable fast. Say what you will about Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Xbox in recent years, but they were clued into the gaming community, even as Microsoft pushed the current against them.
What're the rights like for this stuff in the US? Do they cover hotel and food for the day/night?
"Overwatch 2" was the vision of a director who left Blizzard five years ago, and it never actually came to fruition, so dropping the 2 makes perfect sense (only surprise is that it took this long to happen)
You should read Jason's book on Blizzard which covers OW2s development and the hell it got stuck in before Aaron Keller took over.

Kaplan was OW2 and his own worst enemy. He let the scope of the game grow and grow until the team couldn't handle it.
Kotick offered more staff with no strings or annualisation (ala cod)
Kaplan refused and cooked his own goose.
