Every single individual in the weather enterprise should be utterly furious today.
Today’s firings from NOAA/NWS are unconscionable & make us all less safe.
It is wild to see certain weather bros for the first time realize politics affects them. I hope this inspires them to be more proactively engaged in politics instead of loudly and proudly declaring themselves above politics.
To everyone at NOAA fired today:
You are an incredible human being. You signed up to serve the public. I deeply appreciate what you've given to your team, to NOAA, to our country as a whole.
Your firing is unconscionable. It runs counter to the values we stand for. And we will stand up for you.
chances of warning issuances being delayed, adequate preparation not being taken, current weather data not being available, among many other vital protection measures. (3/3)
lives from weather-related catastrophes. These are the people who relay details to emergency managers to prepare for local impacts, whether that be flooding, a tornado, a hurricane, etc. They are a vital element of natural disaster preparation. Removing them is only going to worsen the (2/3)
I’m not one to put my frustrations into words well but the absolute lack of care being portrayed right now for the people in my career field who provide invaluable service to the public is abhorrently insane. The people that are being eliminated are the first line of information for saving (1/3)
NWS is already understaffed, and this mass firing is only going to increase the chance that warnings are not issued in a timely manner and that key equipment like radars and IT systems will fail at the worst time.
As this country descends into this dark age of anti-truth, my only hope is that those working towards a safer, more sustainable future for this planet keep up the good fight and don't let their light extinguish. The path forward won't be easy, but we forge it nonetheless 🙌 (2/2)
Absolutely gutted for my friends across NOAA/NWS who are receiving word of their unjust termination. The services/research that they provide are critical to this nation's safety and infrastructure, in the face of an evolving climate and expanding vulnerability footprints (1/2).
Losing upper-air data has numerous knock-on effects to human and model weather forecasts 🙁

I am now hearing from multiple folks in the past two hours (including some who have personally been fired) that mass firings have now commenced within NOAA--including, yes, at the National Weather Service.

The hammer fell on NOAA/NWS this afternoon. 😭💔 There were no exceptions. All probationary employees.
All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.
One last thing I want to add.
I’ve had several people, with good intentions, tell me I’ll be fine or I could even make more $$ in private sector.
It’s never been about the $$, it’s been about the mission and the people. SPC is a one of a kind environment with a one of a kind mission.
