I still think the most important goal on an IEP for a student with disabilities is friendship (as defined and described by the student and/or their family/caregivers). Meaningful friendship builds access to learning and agency as a learner. #inclusion #udl #a11y

In my course about inclusive education, students have a conversation (any format) with someone in their life about disability, accessibility, and belonging. When I design a lesson I try to remember that learners vary in how they use the functions of their brain. I try to remember all the research-based strategies I know. And I get very tired, and sometimes overwhelmed, but then I pick up the UDL Guidelines because they help me remember all that stuff!

If I could do only one thing to shift learning in a school community, I would hang a big banner that reads: The barriers is in the design, not the learner. And no matter the discussion topic, I'd bring people back to this statement. It is the greatest design call to action I know. #UDL
When we think about the design of a school using #UDL as a lens, we will likely find places, policies and practices that need to be undone. For example, a school is not universally-designed if students with complex support needs are denied access to the general education spaces and curriculum.
My colleague Michael McSheehan summarizes #UDL better than anyone I know: "Instead of asking if the learner is ready for the lesson, UDL asks if the lesson is ready for the learner."
#UDL is a framework that attempts to summarize variability in learning so that educators can better anticipate and plan for learning variability in designs.
The real power of #UDL isn't that it is learner centered design. It's real power is that it is HUMAN centered design that validates and empowers everyone to contribute authentically and with agency. That small change in phrasing contains massive impact. #EDUsky #UDLchat

The truest measure of #UDL implementation is the absence of blaming for non-learning. We stop blaming students, families/caregivers, and educators and look instead for barriers in design.
