"All of the reductions in carbon emissions we’ve achieved through sustainable sources and electric vehicles will be reversed by the inexorable rise and insatiable appetite of AI."
Hmm it's a bit misleading. Earnings from energy are only about 2% of GDP but we have zero GDP without energy. Adding up the wealth shares is meaningless.
The ultimate source of wealth (profits) is exploitation of land, resources, and labour. Resources are hugely profitable esp if you steal them.
I agree
Today's media apocalypse makes it a good day for everyone to watch this 1998 SNL animation that Robert Smigel and Adam McKay managed to get on national TV once, before it was yanked off the air forever.

As the world rapidly heads into #climate #overshoot I've noticed a disturbing pattern in journal articles recently.
I'll summarize it quickly in this thread 🧵
A must-watch, 6 and a half minute primer from @katyrshields.bsky.social on how the orthodoxy of (white, male, wealthy) economic groupthink has harms all of us by propping up and reinforcing neo-liberalism: youtu.be/42oiE-VKWvg?...
Iconic moment at the Downton Abbey premiere
So honoured to contribute to this series about Herman Daly, connecting his pioneering work to that of his contemporary, Donella Meadows.
Both envisioned an economy that could meet our needs within the planet's means.
It hope it inspires more people to continue their work to reclaim economics 💪.
'Faschismus wird f d Großkapital zu einer Option, sofern d eigene Geschäftsmodell u damit die Fähigkeit Kapital anzusammeln behindert wird u demokratisch nicht gerettet werden kann.'
Hier e sehr lesenswerter Aufsatz v @nataschastrobl.bsky.social z Wechselspiel v #Neoliberalismus u #Faschismus.
Borrowing is just the way the US (and all sovereign currency-issuing nations) create money.
Yes it's a waste of time and resources and is awful and cruel... but the US doesn't need to borrow from any other country, and it doesn't need to earn more taxes. It can just do it.
Money is political.
My bet we'll be watching Glasto on @channel4.bsky.social next year
With the radical progress of automation, we’re heading toward a world where workers are no longer needed — and without workers, there are no consumers.
So what comes next?

At least 37 Palestinians were killed on Monday in new shootings in Gaza near food distribution centres run by private US contractors guarded by Israeli troops, local authorities said.
In the lead-up to Bonn climate talks, developed countries focus on mobilising private capital rather than provisioning public finance which developing countries have sought

(vdb)

Oh wow
Speak out - name it as genocide - and then act. End all arms sales, impose a wide range of sanctions and call for the arrest and trial of all those guilty of war crimes, including prime minister Netanyahu.
Many of our billionaires are richer than any pharaoh or king in the history of the world, while a family lifestyle that could be comfortably supported by a single income in 1980 takes two people working full-time to maintain today. https://trib.al/X9l4PzM
#C4News find the girl escaping the fire in the burning classroom after an Israeli strike
"I walked through the fire all by myself"
"The rubble fell on them (her siblings)"
"I want to see my sisters, to be with them, but they're dead"
"I want to be with them"
Thank you @allouryesterdays.bsky.social (and @davidrvetter.bsky.social and @thierryaaron.bsky.social for sharing)
I also have to credit @vegardbeyer.bsky.social without whom it would no doubt have been three times longer and half as good.
Generations, since the 1950s, have been indoctrinated in hyper individualistic competitive economics, to the extent that we have lost faith and capacity in collective organising. We have to learn again what humans are really good at: coming together to discuss, decide and act.

Exactly! This is the message we were trying to convey.

I'm doing neither. I'm saying it is scientifically inappropriate and ethically questionable to see climate as a problem to be economically optimised, rather than take a risk management approach and define a biophysical limit over which we ought not to cross, and then make policy guided by ethics.
