One of the satisfying parts of the combat to me was how switching to a paradigm with sentinels right before a big attack felt like the equivalent of doing a parry/block. Almost as if you get rewarded with efficiency if you go aggression over safety

And yeah, it definitely could have used better writing and scene structure. But the VAs and the music score did a pretty good job working with what they had!

Thinking about it, the "Shadow Sazh" bit does feel a bit goofy. You could write it off in the sense that Vanille is still a teenager, so "Shadow Sazh" would be how someone of her age would manifest their doubts like. But still, it's definitely no excuse about the whole bit

And Vanille's urge of "it's not over". I feel like, while it's not stated profoundly, those words probably ARE what moved Sazh to not shoot himself at the end. I just wish they gave both of them more development, because that one cutscene was pretty emotional, but afterwards not so much

I do however like the parallel between both Sazh and Vanille like you mentioned, since they're the "running away" pair who also chose to do that before they split up with Lightning. And Sazh eventually snapping, saying how running away (and dying) won't just end in sugar and rainbows is just...

It's weird, because while I agree with all of these, I don't know why I still find that whole cutscene on the rooftop between those two pretty memorable. Maybe it's the music? The buildup to the Eidolon fight just lives rent free in my brain whenever I think of FFXIII cutscenes that left an impact

I absolutely respect that! It was kind of hard to form your own opinion back then because how vocal the discussions surrounding this game were. Been itching recently to replay this game myself haha
