A 60-year-old woman sits across from me on the O-Train, letting out a big sigh of relief. She apologizes: “Sorry! I’m a driver, so it’s nice when you sit down after walking a bit. It’s hard when you’re used to driving yourself around, you know.”
I was impressed – few people make that connection.
C’est où?

🇫🇷 Le versement mobilité, whereby employers with 11 or more employees contribute to transit funding.
🇫🇷🇧🇪 L'indemnité kilométrique vélo, a distance-based allowance employees can get when they ride a bike to work (now called "forfait mobilités durables" to include other sustainable modes).
Every spring, I get a new appreciation for Canadian winters that remove motorcycles from our streets and significantly reduce their numbers year-round. I don't notice when they're gone, but I definitely notice when they're back.
A graph showing that almost all categories of services are available within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. Eating, moving, cultural activities, physical exercise, services and healthcare are available within a 5-minute walk or bike ride.

The MUPs are what made me fall in love with Ottawa-Gatineau. They can be useful for transportation, but are very uncomfortable at night, especially for women, and mostly unavailable from December to mid-April. We also need a connected network of protected on-street infrastructure.
What a beautiful tribute.
In 2024, our family of four drove 4,340 km, all with Communauto. 3,273 km were local trips, mostly for the kids' sports.
In 2024, I biked 3,272 km and walked 569 km.
