….There are a lot of people in this country who desperately need a functioning Labour government - to right the wrongs since 2010 and prevent a Reform government in future. This bear-baiting ego-fest is not it. Thanks for shining the light into this dark corner @petergeoghegan.bsky.social

The BBC is facing a coordinated, politically motivated attack. With these resignations, it has given in | Jane Martinson The corporation should have stood up to the Telegraph, Trump and the Tories. Now, its enemies know how little it takes for it to fold, says Jane Martinson, professor of financial journalism

In an ideal world they really should have stood their ground here - admitted mistakes and moved on. But license fees and all that. Notable that both Tim Davie and Deborah Turness have advocated for more journalism recently. Dangerous times....

A new guest paper by @eliothiggins.bsky.social and @drnataliemartin.bsky.social explores how to fix it.

We need solutions - as local democracy is at stake. We have suggestions but really want to know what you think if you work in or around local media. If you are in Nottingham city centre next Thursday 5.30-7pm - DM us and we'll send you the details. DM too if you'd like a copy of the report. (ends)

The problem is a triple whammy of declining business model, increased information flow into newsrooms and via social media and a political class that does not tolerate scrutiny and without action this could lead to unchecked power and an information vacuum filled by unverified information....m/f

Are you concerned about the future of local news and democracy? Are the shenanigans at Notts - and other - County Councils ringing alarm bells VERY loudly? At CMPCR we've been doing research in this area and have findings to report - spoiler: the situation is not all bad - but it is not good....m/f

Anas al-Sharif, prominent Al Jazeera correspondent, among five journalists killed in Israeli airstrike on Gaza Israel admits deliberate attack on the journalist, known for frontline coverage, in a strike on a tent outside al-Shifa hospital

Labelling journalists as terrorists to justify their persecution, and murder, is an old trick and the grift of very illiberal governments. It β€œjustifies” the action, besmirches reputations and deters others from continuing the vital work. RIP Anas al-Sharif πŸ™
