A graph showing a negative trend in HLE

A graph showing a negative trend in HLE

What's one of the best ways to measure population health?

We'd argue it's Healthy Life Expectancy - capturing not just how long we live, but how many of those years are spent in good health.

New figures are out today. The picture isn't good. At a national level, England's HLE continues to fall.

A sickening society is clear in these statistics

So why is it not in the news?

Google has done more to harm public perception of AI than any other company because its AI summaries, served billions of times a day at the top of search results, are utterly terrible.

What makes it a crying shame is that its top Gemini Pro model is very, very good. But most people never see it.

"would otherwise receive immediate access to welfare and social housing" is BS.

Correct: "after 5 years working in a care home, would be eligible to apply for welfare and social housing on the same basis as the rest of us."

Deliberately misleading/disingenous.

It’s taboo to admit it, but voters bear some responsibility for the frayed state of Britain | Andy Beckett Populists blame an ever-expanding list of enemies for social ills – many of which are in fact caused by changes in our habits and social norms, says Guardian columnist Andy Beckett

Labour's swing toward racism is perhaps the biggest unforced error in British political history; burnt their base to ashes and won them not a single vote on the right.

The Representation of the People Bill: contours of the debates to come The government’s long-awaited proposals for electoral reforms, published last month, will receive their first scrutiny in the House of Commons next Monday. Ahead of that debate, Alan Renwick analyses which of the bill’s proposals – and omissions – are likely to spark most contention. He suggests that pressure to strengthen the bill will be intense on multiple fronts.

NEW BLOG: The Representation of the People Bill: contours of the debates to come

Ahead of the bill's second reading on Monday, @alanrenwick.bsky.social covers 'astonishing weaknesses', an idea that is 'indefensible in a democracy' and another 'breach of such a basic democratic principle'.

My view: Labour voters should vote Green. Not just for the immediate tactics, but because in their hearts they know Labour needs a shake up. For the good of the Labour Party, they should vote Green.

OrbΓ‘n’s pay cheques: Reform candidate fuelled by profits from Russian oil The Reform candidate at this month’s byelection claims he wants to put Britain first, but is he still on the payroll of Viktor OrbΓ‘n’s far-right propaganda unit?

Blimey. Looks like Matt Goodwin, who seems to think the Handmaid's Tale is an instruction manual, is in the pay of an Orban think tank, funded by Russian oil money.

Trans health care "skeptics" lost a key allyβ€”now they're having a meltdown The godfather of evidence-based medicine on rejecting anti-trans "misuse" of his work.

Poor Misunderstood AI

Never before in human history have we been confronted by a technology that's so readily and so widely available, and yet where the experience of using it is so profoundly unimpressive for the average person.

In a pretty grim decision - with one very considerable silver lining - the High Court has dismissed our challenge to the EHRC Interim guidance.

A number of resources follow in a 🧡.

Building the camps The warehouseification of detention and initial thoughts on stopping it.

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.

BBC persists in referring to trans and non-binary individuals as "biological X who identify as X". It's a line routinely used by gender critical groups to dismiss trans and non-binary individuals' identities.
That framing has been shown to cause distress. It definitely isn't "unbiased reporting".

The difficulty is that this is not "a simple problem".

There is no simple route to "growth, jobs and rising living standards" in an age of tariff wars, disruptive new technologies, climate change, war in Ukraine, Brexit & Trump.

The pretence that these things *were* easy has done Labour real harm

Five trans children died by suicide in 2019-20, 4 in 2020-21 then 22 in 2021-22. This is the truth, from official Government data, that Wes Streeting desperately tried to cover up.
