Absolutely. I used to never hike because I was always waiting for someone to hike with me. Solo hiking has been a gift I had no idea I needed.

An excerpt from Jesse Jackson’s powerful speech to the Democratic National Convention on July 19, 1988.

May he rest in peace.

The woman was lost and struggling to figure out how Presby’s elevators work while the dog was practically bouncing because he knew he was beautiful and everyone was cooing at him.

This is very true. There was a blind woman with a new seeing eye dog at the hospital last week and all that dog wanted was to sniff people and get pets. This lovely boy was not helpful to her in the least and made it more challenging to navigate her environment.

Pres. Obama at the Jackson service:

"We are living in a time when it can be hard to hope. Each day, we wake up to some new assault on our democratic institutions."

"If we don't step up, no one else will. How fortunate we were that Jesse Jackson answered that call. What a great debt we owe to him."

Mezzotint print by Craig McPherson, titled "Edgar Thomson", from 1997. It shows a steel mill at night. It's black and glaring lights, and billowing smoke. It makes me think of the description of Pittsburgh as "Hell with the lid taken off".

Craig McPherson, American, b. 1948

Clairton, From the Hill (right), 2006 Graphite on paper
These large-scale works depict two of the last remaining steel and coke plants in the region with direct ties to Henry Clay Frick and now owned by U.S. Steel. They are from McPherson's steel series, developed over the course of twenty years and inspired by visits to his wife's family in nearby Braddock.
McPherson's creations contemplate the legacy of extractive industries that marred both the land and the people of the region for generations. Societal change over the last century, especially regarding labor and environmental conservation, has improved conditions for workers and the local environment, but risks remain. A fatal explosion occurred at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works on August 11, 2025.

Pittsburgh's small Frick museum is currently displaying 2 depictions of steel and coke plants. The description posted next to them ends with "A fatal explosion occurred at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works on August 11, 2025."

That reduces my likelihood I will be spending much money at PNC. Any smart management team would have banked on Cutch retiring as a Pirate.

Antiwar Rap - YouTube

Since I've abandoned Spotify, I've been recreating some of the playlists that were in my account. Thought it was a good time to reassemble my Antiwar Rap playlist on YouTube:
