Two anthropomorphic characters laying in bed: a smaller deer with a chubby large bear next to him. Bear's just wearing briefs and is touching himself while watching the deer under his arm coming hands-free from the vibrating toy inside him. On background a faint drawing shows bear demonstrating the toy to deer, who's looking very interested.

there is even a brazilian comic strip that predates yellow kid by almost 30 years
it's not rare that i talk to an american who's really into comics, really invested in the medium, and they just don't know who Moebius was, that is insane to me
i'm talking about the study of comic books, not just the medium's history but also (and maybe more importantly) the semiotic analysis of it
i'm sure that a lot of these things are regularly contested and are not part of modern academic research, but we still have to deal with a lot of "yellow kid is the first comic"-like myths being repeated over and over in insufficiently researched youtube videos and news and blog articles
anyway it is my impression that american comics research has historically had a big problem with falling into and reinforcing myths of american exceptionalism by intentionally ignoring the comic traditions of other countries, pretending that nothing noteworthy was made anywhere else
quite the contrary, it's very specific and excludes comics that are non-serialized, that are not open-ended, that don't have recurrent characters or that have no characters at all, or that have no dialogue; a ton of comics are not included in this definition
A drawing on brown butcher paper of a group of wolves gazing out of a storefront window. A sign above them reads βweβre open.β A sandwich board outside displays a large wet tongue.
anyway his awful definition was: "A serially published, episodic, open-ended dramatic narrative or series of linked anecdotes about recurrent identified characters, told in successive drawings regularly enclosing ballooned dialogue or its equivalent and generally minimal narrative text"
thus it was in his interest to make everything that came before Yellow Kid "not count" as a comic, so it seems like it was american nationalism getting in the way of actual research, like i assumed
oh okay Thierry Groensteen talks briefly about this in the introduction to The System of Comics, apparently this is at least partly the fault of a certain Bill Blackbeard who proposed a very strict and specific definition of comics because he wanted to make it seem that comics originated in the USA

tumblr post by user sapphling from August of 2023 reading: "sitting anti-kink posters down in front of a wrestling match and explaining kayfabe to them with the patience of a preschool teacher" "You see that one? He's called the "heel." He looks mean and says a lot of scary things, but it's not real and he's actually very nice. When he says "I'm going to break you in half" you don't have to be scared because it's pretend. These two talked about this beforehand, and now they're playing pretend together. Can you think of any other situations that might be like this? Then they have screenshotted tags left on their post by another user reading: "crying screaming and throwing up when you tell me the undertaker didn't REALLY die and come back to life all those times" sapphling follows that with "no that part was real"
It's #bandcampfriday which means I get more money off of purchases than usual! Take this chance to check some of the work I've released since 2016
