I think that is fine. New players will usually struggle at games, showing them what is good and what is bad can be just as valuable.
Optimally, you want them all be viable for sure. But I think the biggest value is taking mental capacity from the new player by making a decision on strategy for them

I really enjoy them if they arent too powerful.
They are nice because they add a bit of asymmetry and newer players can be pushed into a direction then they might not know what kind of strategy to go for.
If there are TOO many of them or if they are too strong, thats when they are issue

I went to the LGS here with a friend to play cmd and it is crazy the difference in the lorwyn and tmnt prerelease. during lorwyn not a single table was available for commander (I estimate about 60 seats/15 tables for 4 players). Today about 8 people were playing tmnt
