Creative inclusion or regressive exclusion? AI and the arms race in teaching and learning - CAUT
As the workshop facilitator demonstrated the latest update in AI technology, we realized that we had lost the arms race of teaching and learning.
AI may have already won the “arms race” in #HigherEd teaching and learning
But the real question is what we do next:
Will we respond with creativity and inclusion, or retreat into policies that quietly exclude the students who need access the most?

This is not just any random report. This is a review of how the major federal fisheries on the U.S. west coast are assessed, basically how U.S. fisheries management should be altered so that it works better.

Puffins and Shags seem to have been hit hardest by recent storms, with many reports of birds washed ashore. This includes one Isle of May Puffin that was ringed as an adult in 1995, making it at least 34 years old!

Behold: the first-ever list of news outlets that have banned generative AI in their reporting. As of today, this is literally information that you cannot find on Google.
My goal is to fill the starter pack, so please send over suggestions with supporting evidence!

There is No Scientific Justification to Revoke the Endangerment Finding
The U.S. EPA's decision to repeal the Endangerment Finding will limit the government's ability to regulate emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.
As I say here, there is no scientific justification to revoke the engagement finding. In fact, over the last 15+ yrs, the evidence of how climate change affects our health has only grown. Higher risk of allergies, dementia, fertility, heart disease, and death: that’s what’s on the line. @nature.org

Thinking about the time I was at a quantum gravity meeting and the man across from me was talking to me and a man next to him turned and said in all seriousness “don’t talk to her, she’s difficult” and it was because I had reacted ”badly” to racism. Meanwhile their heroes were hanging with Epstein.

"Dominion Energy has just disclosed, tucked away in its recent SCC filing, that the Data Center energy peak load demand HAS TRIPLED – just since January 2025."
“In total, approximately 70,000 MW of large-load DP Requests are currently advancing through the Company’s queue. This level of requested load is nearly triple the Dominion Zone’s (“DOM Zone”) current all-time peak of 24,678 MW, recorded on January 23, 2025.”
Dominion has NO real plan to meet this exploding, unprecedented power demand. EVERY forecast they have chosen to disclose is out of date within months. They are signing Data Center electricity contracts and making promises they have no clue how they are going to keep.
In the very next sentence of their filing to the SCC, they admit that there is ANOTHER 2-3 Gigawatts of Data Center power demand PER MONTH in the queue – which is 36 Gigawatts of new power demand EVERY YEAR.
“Moreover, the volume of requests continues to grow, with the Company receiving, on average, approximately ten new large-load DP Requests per month, representing a total additional 2,000-3,000 MW of requested load.”

Among the many reasons I get mad when people describe climate activists as 'unrealistic' or 'emotional' is that you won't any worse disconnection from reality than the very serious and grown-up data centre industry in the United States.....

Pursued by federal agents, suburban ICE observers remain resolved
After a frightening pursuit by federal agents, suburban ICE observers say fear hasn’t stopped them from protecting their communities.
Suburban observers are more alone against the feds: ”We realized we could deal with a ticket, we could deal with going to jail at some point. But we could not deal with the very real risk and high probability of us being injured, us being detained or us being killed.” www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

Puffins struggle to survive as Storm Chandra sweeps country
The Scottish SPCA has urged people not to touch any puffins found on beaches and instead call the charity for advice.
Not only have storms been hampering our plans to get to #islands recently, they've also been causing difficulties for #seabirds foraging on their wintering grounds at sea. We can help seabirds when they come to land, ensuring nest sites are free of invasive predators www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
