"AI is turning research into a scientific monoculture."

That's doing nothing to account for the bias and systemic discrimination baked into the system. It didn't help you recognize that "African American" as a term is increasingly seen as problematic, so you're making my point for me.
How is replacing an LMS with chatGPT relevant to this conversation?
Western culture as a whole is living inside this problem, and academia has a range of approaches to countering it, more all the time. Carving out and protecting space for other voices is a strategic priority and requires a lot of hard work, training, and unlearning. How does AI support that work?
That's some good barn district entoforcement!
AI is trained on data in a world that heavily favours and uplifts white male voices. To what degree is this insistence on the acceptance of AI-generated text an expression of white male desire to maintain that position of priority?
The funniest part is how it implies that "smart people" can see this proposed future is self-ending, but AI is loved by presumably non-smart people and the criticism feels "smug", so we have to stop harshing stupid peoples' squee.
The boundary between writing and using a machine to edit and having a machine compose original text is a clear line. What you call "human-verified" is just reading and copyediting. Maybe we should give Claude copyright and require that you cite it as the author. You don't own what you didn't write.
Well, I can see why Claude is struggling to see a future. This slop argues that good research requires collaboration with scholars who aren't dependent on AI, but advocates for no non-AI-dependent research training. This kind of long walk off a short pier sure "takes a skill".
I just want an endless stream of pictures of dinosaurs looking like fat, fluffy birds. For my mental health.
I probably wouldn't have either if it was me who'd written it! Isn't that always the way. I appreciate the inspiration! ;)
Sometimes those apostrophes just insert themselves and won't go no matter how much you plead with them. Though "Monday's Suck" might be the title of a story about a vampire called Monday and the consequences of her eating habits.
Narcissists are all the same empty person with the exact same desires. They're all copy/pastes of each other.
Do you feed them? They'll understand if you reward different behaviour. I started feeding my crow friends when they flew alongside me as I rode on my scooter. So now they think I respond to pretty flying. They're very polite!
I have become friends with an entire murder of dinosaurs in my neighbourhood. They really like peanuts.
All potential interest in Dune vanished in 2015, as we all know. And it's been 2 years since anyone's had the faintest affection for The Princess Bride. The more you think about it, the more it makes sense.
Yeah, that tracks. No one's been even faintly interested in reading Pride and Prejudice since 1863, 50 years after it was published. It really lost its appeal after that point. There's famously been zero general interest in The Lord of the Rings since 2004, too.
Aug 16 2013 tweet from @ProBirdRights: I am feel uncomfortable when we are not about me?
Well-housed people who prefer a specific mountain view from one window to other humans having a whiff of a shot of having a place to live.
I think we owe it to each other to be truthful. And of course people are going to be frustrated and irritated re: the use of AI, even outraged, so maybe that truthfulness will come out in a angry way. But that's not the same thing as being intentionally mean.
I don't think you have to be MEAN to people who use AI. Just be HONEST and don't accept their claim that the AI slop they prompted was authored or created by them. That's not mean, that's just the truth. Granted, being bluntly truthful can land as meanness to some people.
The day they put a bus between Aldershot and Aberfoyle will be a Very Good Day (hint hint @metrolinx.bsky.social).
I used to do Amtrak from Rochester, NY to Niagara Falls, switch to Go, then Niagara Falls to Clarkson, Mississauga Transit from Clarkson to Square One, and then the Go bus to Guelph.
Reassuring you that you're in the right place! haha That calm, reassuring voice.
Oh sorry, you already said you were at West Harbour. The only thing you need to work out is which platform is serving Union-bound trains, tap on, and then get on whichever one opens its doors on that platform, really.
I love Go trains so much. But then I love picking bizarre routes that go backwards and upside down through transit systems, it brings me great joy to get places no one expects you can get to via public transit.
Which station are you at?
Ooof. Hug your kids.
America is the name of the continent. Your country isn't listed with the As, it's with the Us. Claiming the name is a rhetorical trick to claim ownership of territory, not unlike what Trump is threatening to do. The threat isn't new. It's just more blunt, unmasked, and harder to deny.
