Morning garden series:
Thirsty bees are harbingers of hot, dry, windy weather conditions
Historically - these winds (often called “Santa Ana’s”) occur in the fall, as coastal conditions shift to colder, wet winter patterns
Now- Southern California is experiencing them year-round ➡️ greater 🔥🔥risk

As a California State Assembly Member, I authored legislation to ban the open carry of #handguns in public places.
Alex Kreit, a professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, joined me to speak to KPBS about this and other #gunsafety issues in 2013.

3/Investor owned utilities are primarily concerned about profits for their executives & corporate shareholders.
Affordability, safety & reliability of energy for customers is a secondary concern.
In recent years #SDGE took nearly $1 BILLION in profits out of the San Diego economy.

In a previous post I questioned if these were DoD or HSA training operations in San Diego bay near a restaurant. An image search tool suggests they are likely USMC training activities- not ICE or CBP. Apologies for the confusion.

As of February 9, 2026, a federal judge has blocked California from enforcing a law (SB 627) that bans federal agents, including ICE and Border Patrol, from wearing masks, ruling it discriminates against federal officers. However, the court upheld a separate law (SB 805) requiring these agents to display clear, visible identification. Key Details of the Ruling & Law (as of 2/9/26): Mask Ban Status: The {"No Secret Police Act" (SB 627)} (signed Sept. 2025) is temporarily blocked for federal agents. Identification Requirement: The {"No Vigilantes Act" (SB 805)} remains in effect, requiring agents to display names or badge numbers. Legal Reasoning: The judge ruled that because the mask ban did not apply to state police, it unlawfully discriminated against federal officers under the Constitution's Supremacy Clause.

5/ My personal goal is be fully recovered this year- but I want people with permanent disabilities to feel welcomed & safe, and not have to face ADA obstacles when they participate at future events organized by @sandiegodems.bsky.social
After all: Most of us are 1 incident away from a disability.
4/I asked local party leadership to address these ADA issues, so anyone w/disabilities feels welcomed & safe at all our events and meetings.
Result: the party's Executive Board has voted to form a new "Working Group" to review ADA compliance at events involving the local Democratic Party.
3/ I've required medical care & physical therapy for the past 3+ months. And while recuperating, I've attended Democratic Club events in places that do not fully comply w/the Americans with Disability Act (ADA)
Since I've been elected 2X to serve on the @sandiegodems.bsky.social Central Committee-
Watching the World Series & drinking hot tea at a hotel with friends in San Diego - until a drunken customer grabbed me from behind and gave me whiplash!
2/ The good news: All the European airports had volunteers & staff to help travelers with disabilities.
The bad news: One month later, a person "celebrating" the World Series in San Diego assaulted me at a local hotel!
These new whiplash injuries set my recuperation back quite a bit.

1/ I had a magical time in Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Oslo & seeing Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle in late 2025!
Unfortunately: One of the less enjoyable experiences on that trip was requiring wheelchair assistance to/from flights in Norway & the Netherlands, due to a painful leg injury
