And I say this as someone who has dedicated her entire career to environmental protection and clean energy. The transition is absolutely worth it. But we will only succeed if we are honest about the costs and build public support for how we pay for it.
That is why federal leadership matters. If we want to keep the CLCPA on track, we need federal policies and funding that help states make the transition affordable.
So the real choice is not between βcheap transitionβ and βexpensive transition.β The real choice is whether we manage the transition intelligently and share the costs nationally, or whether we allow the burden to fall entirely on states that are trying to lead.
New York cannot carry that cost alone if we want to stay on track. We need federal support. If the entire cost of the transition falls on New York taxpayers, ratepayers, and consumers in the near term, there will be a political revolt that could derail the whole effort.
I am not in favor of watering down the CLCPA. But we also have to be honest about the reality of the transition. Moving our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward clean electricity will cost money up front. That is simply the truth of building new infrastructure.
