A million things going on in the world but my 14yo is playing piano and singing along to some Billie Eilish sheet music and while I suppose this is a fairly common skill, to get to appreciate it from my own kid in my own household on a random Thursday makes me feel like a trillionaire. π₯°
Eileen Gu presser comments on silver medals seem relevant here! Congrats!
This thread shows a deliberate defunding of U.S. science, engineering, social science, innovation, and education excellence. Itβs a U.S. national security, competitiveness, and economic disaster.
Everyone thinking about jobs numbers needs to follow @aaronsojourner.org because he is the BEST out there.
Does it seem absolutely surreal that the announcers just immediately came back talking about football just now?!?!?
The Cityβs Budget is our future. And you deserve to know how it works.
Large white poster on an easel in front of snowy Columbia University gate. Poster reads βDEATHS BY ICE while in custody or during operationsβ and lists 32 names in blank ink for 2025 and 5 names in black ink for 2026. βAlex Pretti, 37, USAβ is added in handwritten text to a piece of paper taped at the bottom of the list.
From a silent protest at Columbia Univ gate today (116th and Broadway, held weekly Mondays at noon). Doing something, even small, is better than doing nothing.
I donβt want to hear anything from an elected official unless itβs a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.
Lots of great options for making donations via the site below. MN must not stand alone against this fascist administration. God bless Alex Pretti, Renee Good, and all those who are putting their lives, limbs, and eyes on the line to protect their neighbors π
Sue is truly the best. If you're at the meetings this would very much be the highlight!
If you're junior it can be scary bc she is SUE DYNARSKI, sure sure but she's both amazing AND incredibly kind and generous so get over it
Two small kids sit on the sidewalk in front of the old Absoute Bagels, entertaining themselves with a pen and paper, with the red and white striped awning above and some plants and a sign reading βFISH MARKETβ in the background. They are sitting there while their parents wait in a line that extends out the door and down the block, though the photo makes it look like no one else is around.
I have basically a whole photo album full of Absolute Bagels memories (this one from 2016 is one of the few that doesnβt involve cream cheese smeared all over a small childβs face; these two are in HS and college now). Glad to add a new memory today and to have the potential for more in the future
The absolutely most perfect bagel (everything, toasted with scallion cream cheese) on a kitchen countertop, cut in half on a piece of crumpled wax paper in front of a brown paper bag just big enough to hold two perfect bagels
Itβs happening π Thank you New Absolute Bagels for bringing a little extra love & joy to the UWS this week! Makes me feel good about 2026
If you think of "hiring in entry level positions" as "procuring labor to do the tasks entry level people do" then you probably do think AI is a magical headcount reduction machine.
But the point of hiring in entry level positions is to produce mid-career employees.
I have started making egg bites at home and this morningβs variation earned me a handshake from my Great-British-Bake-Off-loving 14yo π
Thanks for sharing this Matt. I wish you didnβt have to. Thinking of you and all my friends & colleagues connected to Brown β€οΈ
The Department of Education shared data today on IHEs where, 4 years after earning a credential, graduates earned less than peers with only a high school diploma.
What ED didn't shout out was just how many of those institutions are for-profits. So I got the data. jamessmurphy.com/2025/12/09/w...
Here is what I put together quickly.

This was also a pretty good take from the Atlantic in Feb www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
My reaction exactly - what year is it? I took some time this AM to request a correction. While I did not identify a specifically wrong fact, the overall thrust of the story was quite misleading. Weird to emphasize a 30-yr comparison when the trend for past 10-15 is the opposite.
Thanks to @appam.bsky.social for a great #APPAM2025. Saw a lot of great work, and Iβm leaving feeling really reinvigorated about both my own projects and our collective project to inform policy with high-quality research. Safe travels home, everyone!
This was a standing-room-only panel session, and I left with more energy than I came in with! Very grateful to all the panel participants and the engaged audience.
I need a very long nap
Or bath
Or both
Popular discourse attributes falling college enrollments to the rising cost of four-year college.
That story is wrong in multiple ways, as @mattbarnum.bsky.social points out in his latest roundup of the evidence (citing a new working paper of ours):

New chalkbeat piece that highlights some of the less well-known realities of our current moment for higher ed. I got to chat at length with Matt about the actual trend in tuition (flat or decreasing at publics) versus the perception in the media.

Motivational stickers in flouncy fonts reading things like βCREAT your OWN FUTUREβ, βSuccess SERIES small THINGS georgeβ and my personal favorite, βMOST DAYS I HAVE idea WHAT IβM DOINGβ
Update: me frantically, and belatedly, dumping out last nightβs leftover stickers to pick out the AI fails.
Iβm copying this next year!
