John Waters taught me a variation of this when he talked about his films.
He never made parodies of movies/genres he hated. He believed to make parody really work, you have to have a strong education and love for the subject you are lampooning.
I think some critics don't actually love movies.

This is a large pixel art piece that is a crossover between the Super Mario Bros franchise and One Piece. I truly feel conflicted. On one hand, I've been watching JB since Monstervision back in the 90's. I hate seeing the regular season come to an end. However, he's 73, if ANYBODY has earned some rest it's that man.
