Excited to be starting my group βEcophotonicsβ with a Minerva FastTrack fellowship! Big thanks to @vignolinilab.bsky.social for your support! Also grateful to my PhD supervisor Malte Gather, and collaborators & students from marine biology to physics. π§ͺπ©πΌβπ¬π‘https://www.mpikg.mpg.de/6920542/ecophotonics
Custom assembly of optical components containing multiple lenses that can be seen through wide slots in a lens tube. The system is illuminated with cyan light.
Slotted lens tubes are definitely the most satisfying little item I have recently gotten from @thorlabs.bsky.social π useful for science but I can already see some cool scientific outreach / teachingβ¦ in that sense, happy international day of women & girls in science π§ͺπ©πΌβπ¬

Did noticed this too but I thought maybe it was a natural career progression π
Is this why turnaround times seem to be really bad right now? I think my submission has been back from peer review since late November and now it seems stuckβ¦?! Have been wondering if editors desks are just swamped with nonsense π€π§ͺ

They already discussed boycotting 1936 Olympics since there was known persecution of Jews already. 1940 and 1944 were cancelled rather than boycotted. But maybe we learned from history⦠well I keep hoping that but then I keep getting surprised by the news with another fascist horror story.
Germany hosted Olympics in 1936 and the US sent Jesse Owensβ¦
One-story house with yellow facade and a small garden in the front, green and pink lit up sky behind it, taken at night.
Winterish pale leafless trees in the front and a well-defined green strip of aurora behind them. A single star can be seen on the night sky.
My phone camera is very bad so these are quite representative of the #northernlights I saw with my naked eye tonight in #potsdam
true, but should we then not focus more on the quality of the proposal, as long as the candidate has at least a reasonable publication record? This was for a postdoc fellowship where anyways your publication record is heavily shaped by the policy of your PhD supervisors lab.
I will defend the reviewer who said something like "quantity is limited yet appropriate for career stage and quality is exceptionally high" - yet the panel turned that into "publication record is limited" which was then basis for rejection while admitting the proposal was clear and thorough.
Sadly, last year my fellowship application was rejected for lack of quantity despite reviewers pointing out high scientific quality of both the proposal and my publications (incl a corresponding author oneβ¦). That was very frustrating. I hope that panels reevaluate their priorities esp nowadays π©πΌβπ¬π§ͺ
We were playing βFairytale of New Yorkβ by the Pogues yesterday and the lyrics on Ultimate Guitar were like βand then we sang a song; a rare old Mountain Dewβ which absolutely sent the only native speakerβ¦
I also recently checked it out of curiosity about the grim #grok news and was appalled how many scientists seem to cling onto the good old #academicTwitterβ¦ ππΌπ§ͺ

First time grandpa gets a self-made xmas present since probably 2010β¦ itβs my favourite photo from the lab in 2025, and led to a nice conversation with a 92yr old about structural color and market transfer of sustainable materials πππ©πΌβπ¬π§ͺ

Time for one of my favourite festive recycling traditions of wrapping gifts in curated newspaper cutouts! This year featuring @zeit.de and some locations on the travel bucket list ππ

Didnβt see the socks but really enjoyed the talk!
Interesting. On the other hand teaching how to use something responsibly might be better than excluding it from teaching altogether. They will use it anyways right? Be it drugs, abortion etc (not to imply these are all wrong) - it usually doesnβt make things more safe to just forbid.
How do I update this information in Google scholar? Like how do I tell it that I am corresponding author?
Interesting! I donβt know how I feel about it. In part, I like it because labs have quite different policies for authorship when it comes to early-career non-first author. So having the metrics be heavily influenced by these middle-authorships also does not seem fair.
Thank you! π

@rohanblake.bsky.social they are peacock feathers!
I have used CAD before - many companies (like thorlabs) have stl files of their equipment you can download and just drop in⦠maybe the light rays are easier to add with something like Inkscape later on?
