HBA calls on federal authorities to:
β’ Launch independent investigations into deaths in immigration detention
β’ Ensure adequate and timely medical care for all detained individuals
β’ Expand humane, community-based alternatives to detention
At least 30β32 people died in ICE detention in 2025 alone and the crisis appears to be continuing into 2026.
The Haitian Bridge Alliance mourns the profound loss of Emmanuel Damas, a 56-year-old Haitian asylum seeker who died from while suffering from complications linked to an untreated tooth infection while being detained in an ICE facility in Arizona.
Haiti was the first free Black republic in the world + was born from a slave revolution who fought for their freedom and won. A staunch abolitionist, seldom know his ties to Haiti + his perspective on Black liberation through internationalism

For years, Haitian TPS holders have been essential workers, caregivers, parents, and pillars of communities across this country.
We urge Members of Congress: Sign the discharge petition. Stand with Haitian families. Extend and Redesignate #TPS4Haiti
If enough Members sign, Congress can bypass obstruction + bring TPS legislation directly to the House floor for a vote
TPS allows Haitians to live + work legally in the U.S. w/out fear of deportation while Haiti faces one of the worst humanitarian + security crises in the world
Haitian Bridge Alliance applauds @pressley.house.gov for filing a discharge petition to force a vote to EXTEND TPS for more than 300,000 Haitians.
155 Members of Congress, including Minority Leader @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social have already signed on. We need 63 more signatures to move this forward.

Thanks in part to the great decision in the Miot case, Haitian TPS holders maintain protection from detention based on immigration status, their work authorization continues, and no targeted enforcement operation emerged in Springfield on February 4th.
Our legal team provided legal consultations in partnership with Viles Dorsainvil, Executive Director of the Haitian Community Help & Support Center, and were on call for any rapid response legal observations needed should a targeted enforcement campaign have begun in Springfield.
Last week, HBA was in Springfield, Ohio, working with our partners and community members as we were preparing for a potential ICE raid, as the termination of TPS for over 375,000 Haitians was set to expire and terminate by the trump administration.
HBA co-anchored this moment following years of sustained advocacy to ensure Black and Afro-Latinx communities are not rendered invisible within broader Latinx policy spaces.
Support our work today so our team can continue to make incredible milestones bit.ly/hbadonate
HBA is grateful to the @hispaniccaucus.bsky.social + Congressional Garifuna Caucus for convening the first-ever Afro-Latino Roundtable in the 50-year history of the CHC! This historic convening created long-overdue space for Afro-Latino communities to be centered, seen, heard, and valued.
π¨ Yesterday, a federal judge postponed the Trump Admins attempt to strip Haitian TPS holders of status while the case proceeds
All TPS status protections remain in effect, including that they cannot be detained based on their immigration status + remain authorized to work
This Black History Month marks 100 years of celebrating Black history, beginning with Dr. Carter G. Woodsonβs Negro History Week in 1926 and growing into the global celebration we have today
HBA celebrates Black love connection and unity across the diaspora!

TPS is set to end on February 3rd, and that means we will see an absurd upheaval of our communities, including families being separated from their US citizen children.β
The organizations ask for an extension and Redesignation of Haiti for TPS to protect between 375,000-500,000 Haitian immigrants who are already in the US, as Haiti continues to grapple with political turmoil, insecurity, famine + internal displacement of over 1.4 million people.
π¨Just In: HBA and @aflcio.org, along with over 350 faith-based, labor, and civil rights organizations, sent a letter to President Trump and his administration urging them to reverse their decision to terminate Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for Haiti.β β #TPS4Haiti
