After a rewarding 4 year term, it's time for me to step down to focus on my role as co-rapporteur of the International Law Association's Committee on the Use of Force. Thanks to @pilabuda.bsky.social, Clare Frances Moran & Saeed Bagheri and to our members for making it such an enjoyable experience!

I hope you have plenty of shirts then
This happened to me when I worked at a law firm - I walked into the boardroom to meet with a new client and before I could introduce myself as the lawyer handling his case, he ordered a cappuccino π

My Bluesky feed is Care Bears and nuclear war
The new nuclear "Basic Principles" just dropped (h/t @dvsteff.bsky.social). The key change is that it's the aggression that "poses critical threat to the sovereignty and/or territorial integrity" instead of "puts the very existence of the state in jeopardy" publication.pravo.gov.ru/document/000...

On a desk, a book entitled 'science fiction as legal imaginary'. The book is edited by Alex Green, Mitchell Travis and Kieran Tranter and published in the TechNomos series by Routledge. Not on the cover, but insider info: the book is "first published 2025", so befitting a book on science fiction, it's doing its own kind of time travel.
Hot off the press, expertly edited by @glexareen.bsky.social, @drmitchtravis.bsky.social & Kieran Tranter and with many contributions I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into (and one by me that I'll let you judge).

I think this moment calls for fresh thinking about law, both domestically (in the US) and internationally.
So, for you legal academics: what (or whom) have you read recently that has been fresh and interestingβeven changed how or what you think?

Iβm grateful for the chance to respond to these distinguished scholars - among those I looked up to during my PhD - in todayβs final symposium post, reflecting on the larger meaning of article 2(4) of the UN Charter: opiniojuris.org/2024/11/15/s... π§΅9/9
Alejandro Chehtman delves into the risks of overly narrow definitions of prohibited force and offers a robust critique of the bookβs approach: opiniojuris.org/2024/11/14/s... π§΅8/9
James Green - co-rapporteur on the ILA Committee on the Use of Force - takes a nuanced approach that highlights both the promise and challenges of my type theory of prohibited force, especially in the grey areas: opiniojuris.org/2024/11/14/s... π§΅7/9
Andrew Clapham's insightful take explores how my approach to prohibited force in the context of blockades and neutral shipping may help address humanitarian challenges in Yemen and Gaza: opiniojuris.org/2024/11/13/s... @abclapham.bsky.social π§΅6/9
Ambassador Mikanagi brings insights from practice to my framework on identifying prohibited force under article 2(4) of the UN Charter. He examines how it applies to territorial acquisition by force - another critical and timely issue: opiniojuris.org/2024/11/13/s... π§΅5/9
