"... many of the most expensive purchases ...including multiple Star Wars-themed kits costing hundreds of dollars each.
“...Star Wars-related LEGO sets that constitute the high end,” Jennings explained. “But there’s also plenty in the middle range — $400 or $500 sets.”

Illustration on blue paper of a scene in space. There are two space ships in the center, one in pursuit of the other among stars and grasping clouds and toroidal shapes covered in a silvery iridescent lattice. Hatch shaded with white, silver and holographic paint.
A daring escape past y^2=x^3+x+3 over F14641
I was sent a lovely little paper last June about visualizing elliptic curves over finite fields and you just know I had to draw about it. Anyway now it’s space and piracy is involved!

A clear cup filled almost to the brim with copper pennies. The pennies are stacked randomly, making it difficult to count visually and prompting an estimation challenge.
A list of five calculus clues to find the total number of pennies.
Clue 1: Upper Bound. The total is strictly less than g prime of 1, where g(x) = (10x^2)(5x^5 + 5).
Clue 2: Lower Bound. The total is strictly greater than h prime of 0, where h(x) = (250x) / (2x + 1).
Clue 3: Tens Digit. The tens digit equals k prime of 2, where k(x) = (7/4)(2x - 3)^2.
Clue 4: Shared Factor. The total is a perfect multiple of f prime of 1, where f(x) = x^3 - (1/2)x^2 + 3x - 10.
Clue 5: Hundreds Digit. The hundreds digit equals m prime of 0, where m(x) = (2x + 1)^3 / (3x + 1).
Bringing the classic "esti-mystery" to my Calculus class. Students make an initial guess of how many pennies are in the cup, then use derivative rules (power, product, quotient, chain) to narrow down possible values one clue at a time. #ITeachMath #MathsToday docs.google.com/presentation...

He experienced The Great War from build up to the trenches to armistice to WW2 and the cold war. His insights into both the grand and grotesque of war is deep.
Thank you for this reminder. I love his Christmas Letters.

Crayon sketch on 9x12 paper.
Top left - purple sun
Top right - two blue horses
Bottom right - one blue horse
Center - horizon line lower splitting black field from upper blue field
Prepping for a whittle your own Dala Horse activity, decided to do some crayon sketching. Then decided to play with idea of "Blue Horses" by Franz Marc as an abstraction in art and math experiment...

Uman’s Diasporic Abstraction
The artist paints the distance between the homeland you lose and the one you try to dream back into existence.
It doesn’t feel like Uman paints toward escape, but rather toward the world as she carries it: the loss of childhood Somalia, the landscapes of Upstate New York, and private interior terrains. Her work suggests finding home in places far from the land that first formed her.

Blue plate with spoon and tiramisu like dessert with a couple bites cut from it
Vegan Tiramisu-like treat. Soy vanilla yogurt with carob powder stirred in until stiff mousse kinda thing happens..
Stack graham crackers and layer with mousse. Cover with more mousse. Chill for a couple hours to soften crackers a bit.
