Okie so I'll talk a little bit about my art.
I've been a performance poet for 9 years and for the past 3 I've been experimenting with blurring the lines between music and poetry and it all made sense to me when I began to do this through the lens of the traditions of my people.
The rest of the songs aren't exactly Hakpanya just me showing off that I could actually rap rap if I wanted to. The subject matter is still very serious stuff tho, more on the economic crisis, I touch on how the sea is swallowing my hometown and I talk about my spiritual journey
Song lyrics start with chants and incantations in both Ewe language and pidgin English and both my rap verses are dragging the Ghanaian government for their unbelievable corruption and thievery 💀💀💀
Agbadza is this energetic drum rhythmic pattern played by an ensemble of different drums and a bell, it is performed with an energetic dance that was historically performed right before wars to invoke a fighting spirit, now it is just a popular traditional dance we dance at any function
The beauty of this song to me is first in the production of the beat, we sampled an Agbadza performance and muted all the vocals and spun the percussions into hip-hop creating a sound that is uniquely both generes

This is a link to an EP I made last year the title song Mevado was part of my Thesis for My MA theatre Arts degree I got at University of Ghana with a scholarship from Exter University's imagining Futures from Un/archived pasts program
So essentially all my sound is now is me creating hip-hop and alternative music by sampling from traditional Ewe poetry and music, beautiful stuff if you ask me
I'm Ghanaian from the Ewe Ethnic group, and our people spread across parts of Ghana into Togo and Benin. In our Language the word for poetry and song lyrics is one and that is Hakpanya, it translates to music making words.

This moment on Bluesky is what it must’ve felt like to be a peasant in in the 12th century when some jubilee took place and all debts got abolished and you got to moon the local priest for a day
This is very creative 😂
