Ok, I'm sorry, comics people, what happened? I just saw allusions.

Breathe
lol, it's basically like an earthquake: that pressure's gotta escape somehow
Sounds like the US comics industry is chewing off its own foot again
I'm gonna sound jaded as hell, but as I tried to navigate the comics space for years and got pooped on continuously for it, the only thing the industry cares about is maintaining their status quo
This thread is insaaannne
-It's a nice feeling.
-I make little enough that I don't have to pay anything to America, the place that, you know, openly abhors my people and supplies a ton of material support to have them wiped off the planet, so I will HAPPILY pay taxes to a place that actually has infrastructure and doesn't want me dead.
--->
-Taxing is simple enough that I don't need to hire a freaking accountant, which I hate, they are ridiculously expensive, but it was a necessary step because, oh no, I'm an artist, how dare I.
--->
-It's never fun to pay taxes without a salary, but the amount I owe here is about only a third of what the US makes me pay, AND IT INCLUDES HEALTH INSURANCE.
--->
I did my Japan taxes and:
-I did have a hiccup with creating an account on the govt tax site, and had to go in person to the local tax office to get it fixed (they were nice, btw)
-Once I got that part fixed, it was FREAKIN SIMPLE to file taxes, even though I'm self-employed.

I have the full transcript of the comics pages on my site! The one in my site has a more a prosey-description, but just for bluesky summary purposes: the first two pages of book one: the carpet merchant, we open to the Blue Mosque and the bazaar/market suburb of Istanbul: where the main characters live.
Zeynel presenting a very elaborate pink, green and red floral Usak carpet: a floral central medallion surrounded by intricate arabesque florals, with a blue border. His client is very impressed.
The opening illustration for Volume One: A Fragment of a Turkish Tale, which was originally the cover for its English and French print edition. Zeynel is seated with a Quran in his arm, while he holds Ayse's hand on his shoulder. The BG is stylised; large expanses of black trees and bushes filled with gold Ottoman floral embroidery, in front of a red star-filled sky. A bat and a nightingale are in flight around the title.
🌹 Volume I and Book 1 of The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya begins today!

We start with Zeynel in the middle of tempting a client with magnificent carpet wares, and with me contending with the fact that I'd be drawing so many elaborate patterns.
Headline: "American Jewish College Students Are Giving Up on Israel. This Is How We Can Stop the Drift"
I'm always struck by how this is framed as the responsibility of other American Jews, and not of Israel to change its policies dramatically.

Creepy
This city is at its best when it is full of art made by and for New Yorkers. Access to the arts growing up here, through student discounts and education programs, is why I have a career in theater. It means a lot to see a politician champion this cause
I don't think I'll ever stop being mad at that industry and I'm left with comics PTSD for ever trying to fit into it.
It was more important to change one's SNS profile pic to a fist with pens/paint brushes between the fingers to look powerful for having the courage to draw a series titled "My Dumb Comics" or smth similar.
Nevermind I wrote a straight-up article to point out how Arab cartoonists were getting killed or maimed for drawing actual provocative work. But oh no I talked about Arabs. Immediate ignore.
I'm getting a lotta flashbacks to how CH did this nonsense for eons, resulting in that horrific attack on their offices, and indy cartoonists took it to mean they were all collectively under attack, and acted like they were badass for drawing Zippy the Pinhead or w/e.
I was in a cafe in Kyoto and saw an older Japanese gentleman wearing a kuffiyeh scarf w/the Palestinian flag on it. I told him that I was Palestinian and thanked him. He told me was on his way to see the movie Jenin Jenin & he was happy that I was there.
These are the interactions that I live for.
Merry Christmas, folks
Lol excellent
They really only celebrate with Christmas cake here, so yeah I am partaking
The first thing that jumped in my mind was "the C-Men"'😭😭😭
Found the actual men in women's bathrooms assaulting women.
