I'd like to add diplomacy to the game as an update. But, it would have been a chunk of extra work for release, and it's already taken 11 years! So, it was a calculated decision to focus on constant competition and threat.

You're right, the AI is pretty easy in the tutorial in order to be accessible. There are difficulty (easy, medium, hard), map size (6, 12, 20 stars), and player count (2-8) options for the main game.
