I mean, i've never found any of the attempts to make rich kids seem working class in any way believable, but they just keep trying
Tbh my biggest reaction to Chalamet not wanting to work in an art that needs saving like ballet and opera is that, my child, all art needs saving these days. They're trying to replace us with a fuckin algorithm. Movies get one week in a theater unless something sparks off big like Sinners
scientifically speaking, pretty much any opera singer could snap TimothΓ©e Chalamet like a twig
It was such repugnant and lazy storytelling!
This doesn't even get into the personalities involved, but anyway.
Once upon a time i would have apologized for this take but it's been 20 years or whatever, sometimes it's ok for something to just have a certain amount and not become a massive unending franchise.
Well that and i just really hated River as a character. That particular broken weepy helpless to manic pixie murder machine dream girl trope is 1000% not for me. "But she gets so awesome later" eeeeeeeeh, "and then the embodiment of trauma gets triggered and commits violence yay" is also no from me
The fundamental problem with bringing back anything firefly for me is that i read the plans for season 2 and decided it was probably for the best that the show died young
Thinking that if i can use hex to find a color that is more specific than the named colors it will look better but instead it is just a unique form of digital vomit in times new roman
When "gif" just meant those ugly sparkling roses.
"But he sells oysters!" Yeah, lots of rich motherfuckers do working class drag. It's how they get other upper middle class people who think they're working class cowboys because they hate queers to vote for them.
Hotchkiss, the Connecticut Prep School, Platner attended, is for rich kids, and always been for rich kids. I had some friends who attended the local prep school near where I grew up (Berkshire School). I would not consider Hotchkiss to be the type of New England Private school Grim describes.
But the other issue with the content tiktok (or insta, or YT) makers is that they act like tricking the algorithm is important so they can speak their truth but then their feed is just reading someone elase's Reddit post out loud.
But that's what gets eyeballs, so whatever.
In a click economy, a lot of people are allergic to the notion that they're not entitled to ANYONE'S attention. If not by default, then certainly once people decide they don't want to read/watch the "content" they're making.
If I want / need to filter out rape discussions, the coy misspeakings suck
A problem I have with TikTok speak is that if an algorithm can censor the word "suicide" then it can also sensor "unalive". Although I guess it's now just kill generally that is "unalive"?
But the other problem with it is that it also messes with the personal filters of other people.
My very first website was a geocities page where I just put up whatever screenshots of Final Fantasy 7 people sent me. Once upon a time my 14-15 yo self typed <img src... and dutifully credited the email address that sent it to me which was something along the lines of sexyman69@wherever
It's hilarious that "working class" now applies exclusively to the racist failsons of regional car dealership owners but every unemployed trans person is an "elite".
Meanwhile i was like... just gonna read their stuff and had very little intentions of publishing for free or whatever in a tiny zine.
I went to the dealer's room/etc when AWP was in Seattle and the editor of a small local literary zine looked like she wanted to snatch the magazine out of my hands to keep me from buying something with her guidelines in it when I said I wrote spec fic. "We don't publish that"
I'm in the weird little 79-84 microgeneration

Wrong. It's just that space flight devolved into the threat of the nuclear winter of our bodies, and the WWW has devolved into the threat of the nuclear winter of our souls.
I thinj this is just the millennial version of the boomeresque "you promised flying cars" - by the 90s it was clear we were never getting the space age utopias. I was never promised that. But there was a brief time when I actually felt like maybe humanity could get closer to each other in a good way
But I could also just be stupid.
There's a lot about the early web that sucked massively, but I at least feel like I remember a time when corporations leasing AWS instances weren't cajoling us into monetizing every aspect of our existences for their benefit
Like once upon a time it was about posting bad pencil drawings on a html 1 website and chatting on irc and now it it feels like being crushed by capital
Idk something about looking at the late 90s images of amazon and google and the other defunct sites of the time gives me the deeply sad nostalgias
It's not that the times were perfect, or that my misspent elfwood/LJ youth is all that important, but i miss the imaginary world I thought the net was
So no matter how βgoodβ your state government is, if ICE or CBP grabs you, the feds can just hoik you off to a place where you currently have no right to due process.
They can snatch you from anywhere and send you the gulag in LA or TX before your family even knows youβre gone, and before you can file a habeas petition. Then youβre in the collaboration zone.
