Le grand-père de mes filles était demandeur d'asile. Comme orpheline politique au Québec, lors des dernières élections, j'ai voté pour le seul parti politique qui m'avait répondu concernant l'importance des places subventionnées pour les demandeuses d'asile. Une question de valeurs fondamentales.

Yesterday my colleague received a phone call during my student's thesis defence. I saw her hesitate, wanting to answer, but choosing not to interrupt. She told us it was her parents calling with news of their safety in Iran. People here can't call there. They wait. And hope.

I'm seeing a lot of posts about Iran here, but few from Iranians. I don't know if this helps, but here's a representative sample of posts from my Iranian students past and present. We must ensure we aren't looking towards Iran while holding a mirror reflecting back only our own interests or biases.
Grateful the cellphone networks were working for the many Iranian students here. Everyone I interacted with yesterday got news of the safety of their relatives. Relief. Maybe even a glimmer of hope.

In a meeting with drinking water treatment plant managers and learning that a city north of Montréal avoided an extended boil water advisory because of research from our lab. It was a great day for the research associate who worked on the project when I shared the news with her.

J'ai entendu la même chose venant de la bouche de dirigeants d'écoles de génie. Une fois j'avais répondu avec sarcasme, "C'est vrai. On ne voudrait pas plus de femmes en génie, car le "pink collarization" de nos programmes mènerait à une baisse de nos salaires." Aucune idée s'il m'avait compris.
Voici les conclusions de l'article le plus cité d'Y. Gingras. Je me demande pourquoi il semble avoir rétracté ses propres conclusions. Il ne semble pas avoir le courage d'envoyer une lettre à l'éditeur de Nature pour rendre cette rétraction officielle.
