It’s not just the stories, but Ellison’s casual comments in the forwards reveal him to be misogynistic, vile and homophobic.

When I wrote to her, inquiring about a postdoc, I sent her the mock-grant. We ended up editing it together and getting funding. 5/6

I followed her work throughout my PhD in bacterial genetics with Issar Smith at NYU. For my qualifying exam, I wrote a mock- grant proposal on ES cells, based on Gail’s work. 4/6

But EC cells were too abnormal. This idea had to wait for Gail’s discovery and characterization of embryonic stem (ES) cells, as demonstrated by the Nobel Prize winning work of Capecchi, Evan’s and Smithies. 3/6

In a 1980 college class, where we read the primary scientific literature for the first time, I was enchanted by her mini review on embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells and the possibility of using them to generate a mouse. 2/6

Very sad news. Gail Martin (1944-2026) was a figure in developmental biology. She pioneered the field of ES cells.
A great colleague, a friend and a lovely person.

Today, as is my habit, I went for a vigorous long walk, sometimes backtracking due to some unshoveled sidewalks. At one point, sweaty & breathing hard, thinking of the Olympic skiers at their run’s end, I looked for a patch of snow and ice to lay down upon.

But it was all grey and sooty.
