Nour Halabi's book "Radical Hospitality" sitting among the shelves of chocolate boxes at Claudio Corallo chocolate store in Palo Alto, California
That moment when you enter an exquisite store to buy chocolate and are greeted your book and a signature request!! I obliged, while I enjoyed handmade hot chocolate! (Claudio Corallo store in Palo Alto, California - one of the leading chocolate makers in the world).

A joyful moment of two people embracing tightly. Nour Halabi, wearing a checkered outfit, smiles broadly with her eyes closed as she hugs an event attendee, conveying warmth and connection.
A group of people sits in a meeting room, engaged in discussion. Nour Halabi is speaking, facing several attendees seated in chairs. Large television screens and a video conferencing camera are visible in the background.
We were honored to welcome back alumni affiliate @nourhalabi.bsky.social last week. Nour shared profound testimony from her recent homecoming to Damascus & unpacked emerging journalistic practices in Syria. @asc.upenn.edu @bzelizer.bsky.social

This Is a Crucial Moment to Stand Up to Islamophobia. Instead, Democrats Are Caving.
Republicans have made Mangi the target of a baseless smear campaign. Democrats are letting it happen.
"Democrats who have vowed to vote “no” on Mangi’s confirmation are openly giving credence to Islamophobia, calling into question what the party actually stands for."

Shooting people in a hospital, or any act of violence in a healthcare facility is completely unacceptable.
We unequivocally condemn the continued attacks on healthcare facilities in #Palestine. #Gaza

The Biden admin's vetoes on humanitarian aid to Gaza undermine its own UN reform agenda, yet it needs the UN Security Council to work. Grateful to @atherton.bsky.social for letting me argue in The International Policy Journal's inaugural issue that the US's interests rest in letting others lead here

Inside the Pa. court case pitting a genealogist against Ancestry.com
Pennsylvania hired genealogy company Ancestry.com to digitize a sweeping list of historical documents. Now the company claims it owns those digital copies.
I'm a believer that digital archives are:
1. Important for increasing access to historical records
2. Part of government's duty to preserve and make records available to citizens.
Pennsylvania should not be giving ownership of digital records to ancestry.com

Activist or Academic or Both? The Quandary of Scholactivism for the Minoritised in the Ivory Tower
What makes a scholar an activist, & can an activist be a “proper” scholar?
In March, I wrote a reflection on academic activism, "Activist or Academic or Both? The Quandary of Scholactivism for the Minoritised in the Ivory Tower." Here I question both the label "activist" and the role of the academic.

Gaza and Academic Self-Censorship
Our new Chronicle essay reveals eye-opening results from the new Middle East Scholars Barometer survey.
Self-censorship, hostile pressure campaigns, feckless administrators. Shibley Telhami and I have a new article in the Chronicle of Higher Education based on our recent MESB survey of almost 1000 academic Middle East scholars. Its chilling.
