When I dumped the Unreleased Japanese version of Burnout 1 PS2, unaware it never came out in Japan, I left it in my โnon-priorityโ prototype pile for nearly a year
When I finally revisited it, I realized it was a important build๐

I would love to see a new Wave Race, and a new 1080 snowboarding. Loved both Wave Race Blue Storm and 1080 Avalanche on Gamecube, never would I have thought those would be the last ever entries in the series back then. We took good games for granted ๐ญ
Yeah Ridge Racer 64 isn't very polished. The handling was a little wobbly? But I think the 3rd person view drifting in that one is better than the PS1 version.
I think that was Daytona Championship USA (aka Daytona 3)?
Never played that version, completely flew by me. I had Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter for PC, but never even knew about a Daytona USA port back then. I will have to look it up! I do love the Xbox Live Arcade version though, it's even playable with a gamepad since steering is thumbstick friendly!
I say it's broken because I can't see why they'd add that snap on purpose if it wasn't in the arcade original. I know in 1st person view it's mostly avoidable, but playing in 3rd person view feels very broken to me, especially compared to Rave Racer, which was the first arcade game with 3rd person.
I can forgive the single track, since it was supposed to be just the arcade experience at home. But I can't forgive the butchered drift mechanic. They should have at the very least fixed it for the Ridge Racer Hi-Spec version that came bundled with R4, I would have played that version a lot more.
I could be wrong about Rage Racer, will give it another play through again, but yeah it's definitely fixed in R4. The one thing I do remember about Rage is the walls and sidewalks often had the collision area offset by quite a bit, as if they were coated by 1/2 meter thick invisible barrier.
Which baffles me because for decades PS1 Ridge Racer has been considered a very good arcade-home port. The core thing in a racing game is the handling feel, and they didn't replicate that correctly for the home version...
That's only the 2nd time (after @gamingforages.bsky.social) I've seen anyone mention that abrupt snap, always wondered why not many notice. I thought it was just poor implementation/rushed port for PlayStation console launch. It only affects RR1 & RR Revolution. They fixed it for Rage Racer & RRT4.
So good at wasting our boost
I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I thought the PS2/EA Black Box ver. of NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 had the best handling in the series from that era, especially when picking the Extreme handling type. I find Underground handling to be sluggish in direction changes, and cars pivot from center.
As for the PS2 port of Model 2 Sega Rally, it works perfectly on the PCSX2 emulator ๐
The Xbox 360 version of Daytona USA was through Xbox Live Arcade, and no longer available. The best way to play it right now is through the Xenia-Canary emulator. If you get the XBLA Daytona USA demo ROM, then change one line in the Xenia-Canary config, it unlocks the demo to play the full game.
Hey everyone, the legendary M2 has arrived here on Bsky - show them some love and follow!

Rally de Africa and Rally de Europe from Prism Arts. They're the closest things the PlayStation has to Sega Rally on the Sega Saturn.
Yeah I was thinking that too. And it's unlikely to ever happen, I've been waiting 8+ years for my ACA Neo Geo library on Switch to get online multiplayer someday. Hamster don't seem too fussed to invest in adding online in the same way Nintendo does with their NSO virtual console titles.
It showed up here in the UK sometime late afternoon/early evening.
And the walls and curbs have an extra half a meter thick of invisible collision barrier.
Hah, Iโve been doing that too, but I only have a Switch 1. Seems itโs only on the Switch 2 so far. The trailer mentioned it will be on bothโฆ
Never liked the first Screamer, Screamer 2 was slightly better, but Screamer Rally I enjoyed quite a bit.
Yep handling is slightly different, Ridge Racer 2 steering is sharper & straightens up faster, while RR1 has smoother steering. Another change is hitting the back of other cars doesn't lose as much speed in RR2. That and the nighttime and sunrise effects of 2nd-3rd lap is far more prominent in RR2.
With the addition of a rear-view mirror, and up to 8-cabinet link multiplayer. And some small tweaks to CPU opponent behavior.
Ah I had the DS version too, itโs not the same game at all haha. The PSP version looks and plays a lot more like the home console games. The DS version has major compromises in not only graphics, but also vehicle physics, collisions, and handling model.
I haven't played Burnout Dominator, I should get round to that at some point. It's the only one in the series I haven't played (besides the mobile spin-off Burnout Crash). But I did really like Burnout Legends on PSP, that one is like a best-of Burnout 1, 2 and 3. Worth checking out if you haven't.
I played it on Gamecube too, it's an outstanding game, but a shame it's nowhere near as popular as later entries in the series. So satisfying just drifting+weaving through traffic while facing the risk-reward factor of maintaining and increasing your boost chain. We need a port for modern platforms!
Also, they could have incorporated the whacky-ness of OutRunners, the animations of plus-sized driver+passenger leaning side to side to keep the car from rolling over as it corners on two wheels while their clothing flutters in the highway winds! They could have out-crazied Crazy Taxi with a sequel!
I always wished Sega would give OutRunners a sequel in the vein of OutRun 2/2006 Coast 2 Coast. Unlike OutRun, OutRunners would never be stuck on old hardware due to the Ferrari license.
Got back around to some Hang-On GP last night. If Ridge Racer had motorcycles, better music, and was a good game, you'd have this!
