A brief observation on the relationship between antecedent status and reviewing incentives. Liam Kofi Bright ABSTRACT It is often believed that academics are especially harsh in their evaluation of work that critiques their own ideas. I dispute that claim. Rather, I say, consideration of the credit incentives for academics reviewing critique of their own work should lead us to expect them to typically be particularly generous to critique of their own work.
In what many are calling the most CV efficient strategy ever, I have my 2026 paper out already (relax for the rest of the year comrades!) and it's actually a bit of a joke one. Link here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... and abstract attached. But I'll just tell the story of how it came to be....

I just published a Cambridge Elements that offers a critical overview of recent work in epistocracy, Confucian meritocracy, and democratic theories of meritocracy. Free to download for the next two weeks. URL: t.co/Z5BOYrCRGF.
It’s publication day! Spread the word. The perfect Christmas gift for the pessimist in your life.
My paper on institutions and intimacy now got its @apsrjournal.bsky.social issue number 📚 ⌨️ !! www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Was very proud of this little essay writing guide for Philosophy when I put it together 7 years ago in those innocent pre-COVID days when an animated power point video was cutting edge technology. Still getting viewed from time to time.

Very excited to share this year’s Ronald Dworkin Colloquium lineup.
@ucl.ac.uk has been running this series in legal & political philosophy since 1998, when Dworkin founded it. Still going strong.
Fantastic paper by Hallvard Sandven breaking new ground in the crowded feasibility debate. I’m convinced by the argument that feasibility is either superfluous or moralised.

Thanks Avshalom!!
Thanks, sounds super interesting! I'll have a look!!
Josh Cohen and I have a new (short) paper in @science.org! Researchers at Google built a "Habermas Machine" for democratic deliberation. We ask whether its knack for building agreement comes from genuine deliberative merit or from people over-trusting algorithms. philpapers.org/go.pl?aid=CO...
My @apsrjournal.bsky.social paper on politics and intimacy is featured in Political Science Today @cambup-polsci.cambridge.org in a great piece by Ewa Nizalowska 💫🔭
It's that time of year! If you are a new PhD student in philosophy starting this fall, please let me know to add you to the starter pack!
Alternatively, add the starter pack to get some fresh perspectives. :-)
Intoxicated by warm praise and affection yesterday. Something of a hangover today, finally clearing out my office.
Yesterday we celebrated @jowolff.bsky.social remarkable career. Hard to put into words, so here’s a glimpse of the standing ovation that closed the day. Love, admiration, philosophy at its best. Days like this remind me why we do what we do.
My now *former* student @stephaniewanga.bsky.social (stephaniewanga.com) successfully defended her thesis yesterday! She's off to take up a postdoc in Wellesley next! We worked together on political philosophy with an especial look at anarchic theories and their application in post-colonial Africa.
