While I did like it, I felt those things, too. Definitely enjoyed βThe Goldfinchβ much more.

Wonderful! Thank you!
I love an update like this! Iβve not read it and very interested. Please update us again to let us know if it kept its promise! π

Yep. Iβve DNFd several good books that were just too much right now.
Absolutely! The Vonnegut museum is in downtown. She also sent me this link to events in nearby(ish?) Bloomington.

βMother Nightβ by Kurt Vonnegut
#BookSky
Holding a library paperback of βMother Nightβ by Kurt Vonnegut in sunshine. Itβs a navy blue cover with a cartoonish drawing of some sort of submarine looking vessel (maybe Iβll understand what Iβm seeing after I read further into the book). Behind the book you glimpse my lap, a wood deck, and a Bluetick Coonhound whose booty is out of frame but warming my feet.
My good lord am I loving Vonnegut. My research librarian bestie has informed me of a museum and a festival honoring him in Indianapolis. Looks like Iβve got a trip to plan!!!

Read this as ARC & enjoyed it. Makes Cleopatra a complex character. Puts you right into her world when it would be easy to fall into contemporary descriptions.

π Delightful!
Oh, I love that! You know, I just listened to an interview with him on the Ezra Klein podcast. I could listen to Saunders talk all day. Might be something youβd enjoy checking out, too.

Welcome to Friday, my fellow βDedicated Readers.β π
This passage made me feel so understood. From the introduction to his book βA Swim In A Pond In The Rain.β

Holding up a paperback library copy of βThe Old Man and The Seaβ by Ernest Hemingway. Picture taken in my car before dropping in the library return. The cover image is a of the sea with the sun coming up or going down at the horizon in center of the page. Silhouetted agains the orb of the sun is a small boat with a single man in it wearing a fishing hat. The colors used are black, teals and peach tones.
Returning to library. Hemingwayβs prose is so atmospheric. While I did roll my eyes over the subject matter, his writing is so soothing I loved it anyway.

I do not know of her but I'll add to the reading list!
Oh! And I also loved his reusing phrases in different ways throughout! (Ugh, delicious.) The "so it goes" that he uses with every reference to death starts as clever. As the book continues, it becomes this powerful echo of his theme that stays consistent through the shards of story. Thrilling.
Absolutely! A reason I've been drawn to Percival Everett is because he does not endeavor to wrap a story up nicely or help the reader feel comfortable with what shouldn't be. I liked this novel for doing something similar in a very different way.
I've enjoyed H for his restraint. His writing really brings me into the atmosphere of the stories, or maybe it kickstarts the brain to fill in more? Making it a richer experience?
I've got "A Farewell to Arms" coming to my library so I can't compare the two yet but I see your description in H's other work, too! that description of H's dialogue is spot on!

Hey Jill! The next Hemingway book Iβve got lined up is The Old Man and The Sea. It will be a day or two to reach my library branch but Iβll be reading that this week.

Definitely do! If you think of it, let me know what you think.
I canβt wait to talk with you about it!
A paperback copy of βSlaughterhouse-fiveβ by Kurt Vonnegut lays on my dark, wood coffee table next to a plant and knick-knacks. It has a bright red cover with a skull and crossbones in yellow. Out of right side of the book are many tabs marking pages.
This just made my top books ever. I suggest reading it, then reading the first chapter again - then marveling.

Haha! Well, Iβd recommend picking one of them up soon.
βShe celebrated frustration by clapping her hands,β is an example. Another is a line about soldiers in the trench βloving the walnut stocks of their rifles.β I get a little thrill like that on nearly every page.
Iβm loving it. The stories in it are dark but I love the way the book is laud out and the style of his writing. Iβm placing tabs to mark combinations of words that make me happy. I love it when a book has me doing that.
