So far, many such as Assm. Erica Mosca, former Assm. Pat Hickey, charter school leader Ignacio Prado and edu nonprofit leader Sean Parker are throwing their support behind Victor Wakefield, a Teach for America leader, former Guinn Center fellow and State Board of Ed member
The State Board of Education meeting is now underway. The board will interview six state superintendents today and tomorrow, and will pick three finalists to forward onto to Gov. Lombardo, who will make the final pick.
WCSD school board VP Adam Mayberry is running for Sparks City Council Ward 4. Last year, former trustee Joe Rodriguez left the school board after he was elected to the Sparks City Council.

The Washoe County School District has identified and taken disciplinary actions against the individuals behind the recent vandalism at Reno High School, which included use of racial slurs and anti-Semitic marks.
Gov. Lombardo is appointing Steve Canavero as interim State Supt of Public Instruction. Heβll be stepping into the role as Jhone Ebert is taking over as CCSDβs supt. Canavero was the State Supt prior to Ebert. He was also the 1st state charter school authority exec director
The Clark County School Board votes 7-0 to hire State Superintendent Jhone Ebert as the district's next superintendent. Ebert had overwhelming support among the voting and nonvoting trustees and community members.
Trustee Dominguez asks how can he rebuild trust/relationship w/ staff. Welsh says there needs to be opportunity to hear staff feedback and regular meetings with different district groups.
On to Qs. Trustee Biassotti asks what is the main reason behind profiency rates misalignment w/ grad rates. Welsh advocates ensuring advance coursework is available to all students.
He notes HS grad rates, new board and appointed trustees as strengths, but cites weakness such as the Lundy ES closure, using fed funds for teacher recruitment at vacation destinations.
The next supt candidate, Jesse Welsh, is up. Like Anzalone, he also has history at CCSD.
Other ideas Anzalone hopes to bring to CCSD from his Wash. school district include
-a supt budget committee so "it's not just falling on a CFO, or it's not just falling on a superintendent, or the board"
-alignment among feeder schools
-program to help students entering kinder
Trustee Stevens Esparza-Stoffregen asks for his financial plan for district. Anzalone says he wants to look at the budget and see if there's areas where they can trim, particularly at the central office level "because my goal is to bring you a balanced budget."
Anzalone said he sees himself as an additional board member. His board prez was supportive of his application and said he'd be crazy not to do it.
Trustees Dominguez and Satori ask him about what he would do rebuild relationship with staff and how he works with his current board. He says that starts with SOTs and working w/ committees.
And now Qs from trustees. 1st up, Trustee Isaac Barron. He asks what would the 1st 100 days w/ him would look like. Anzalone says he will be at school and the Legislature. He says because he is from CCSD, he doesn't need full 100 days to learn about the district

He notes CCSD's starting teacher salary as a strengthen, but notes a lack of trust & transparency, disparities in the salary schedule as weaknesses.

"Our staff and students cannot afford delays and it's time to get to work," he said. Anzalone said this job would not be a stepping stone for him. "This is my last stop."
CCSD's superintendent candidate interviews are now underway. First up on the list is John Anzalone. He recalls coming to the board room 30 years ago as a Chaparral HS student. He tells the board returning to CCSD feels like home, and say he understand the landscape and urgency
"(The results) point to the importance of maintaining an unflinching focus on how we ensure our time with our students and our resources are aligned to research-based practices to achieve student success," she said in a Wed statement.
NV State Supt of Public Instruction Jhone Ebert celebrated that NV was one of 13 states to post higher average student scores in grade 4 math in 2024 when compared to 2022, but note that other results are sobering.
Clark County eighth graders saw drops in their average reading and math scores, by 5 points and 4 points respectively.
Clark County saw an increase in fourth graders performing at or above basic, proficient and advanced reading and math levels.
In Clark County, fourth grade studentsβ average math score for 2024, 231, increased by 6 points from 2022, but still lags behind its 2019 level by 4 points.
There was no significant change in their average reading score.
