I wrote this essay last year, and it has just been published. Its publication comes at a moment of barbarism: yesterday, more than 100 children were killed in Iran as a result of a barbaric and unlawful attack by Israel and the United States.

I do not think the world has grasped what the garrison state has just done: it has destroyed everything the world has been trying to build for hundreds of years. Evil.

That is roughly 10% of the population. To put this into context, it would correspond to:

1,000,800 of Sweden population
8,000,000 of German population
7,000,000 of the UK population,
4,000,000 of Ukrainians.

Today, the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law issued its annual report, A Global Legal Assessment of Serious IHL Violations. In the section on Gaza, their assessment is that at least 200,000 people have been killed in Gaza genocide.

Since early morning, Isreal has been killing Gazans. At least 25 were killed. No provocations. Nothing. This is how Israel behave and have behaved since it was created by western states. State established by blood of Palestinians and ethnic cleansing .

I haven’t been very active on social media in the past few months for many reasons. One is that I haven’t felt well mentally—and honestly, who could feel okay after witnessing the Israeli genocide? I’ve also been busy writing some long essays about Gaza.

Did you ever taste Gaza Kunafeh? It is not like the Nabulsia.

When my father passed away six years ago, I had one purpose — to keep his legacy and words alive. I wanted to capture the oral history of Gaza in a book. What began as a form of therapy became a journey through soul-crushing memories and moments of joy.

It was a hard yet deeply meaningful few years to write it. “Fearful in Gaza” is now here. Please feel free to order a copy or reach out if you’d like to organize a talk.

This memoir carries my mother’s voice too, as she and I write our stories together — echoing Gaza’s history and the lives of its generations. Writing it required becoming the editor of my own life, shaping an untidy sprawl of half-remembered events into meaning.

It took years of work and countless sleepless nights. Now, after many months, Gazans write back — writing in their best voices and finest stories. With pens in hand, they tell their truths.

At first, I considered writing a novel, but then I read Edward Said’s remark that “a failed researcher is one who writes a novel.” So I turned instead to memoir, because memoir is the art of inventing truth.
