Consider Phlebas is close-ish - a shape shifting agent hired by a militarist warmonger empire tries to pull off the recovery of an invaluable enemy asset. The empire is on track to lose the war it's in, and what he's trying to do gets harder and harder.

I find students fixate on the three things without working out what connects them. Tell me about the cake, not the ingredients. Tell me a story about a weird thing you noticed, not the three formal elements you'll move through to briefly mention that weird thing somewhere in the telling.
A barber once asked me that. I had no idea there *was* a "toward"/"towards" difference. He seemed very surprised I didn't know. Afterward, I looked that up and found there wasn't a difference after all, except maybe region of preference ("toward" ~ American, "towards" ~ British). I'd been duped!
