IMO, Tesla is trying to create exactly the situation described in this article about airline pilots. Handle things when everything is great, fail spectacularly when things go wrong. Lull pilots/drivers into a sense of security, then expect them to be prepared when the shit hits the fan
Cruise and Waymo want(ed) to solve the hard problem. Not just “how can we take over during 98% of time when everything in the road is hunky dory”, but when the unpredictable happens, how do we make sure people don’t die. Tesla’s approach is “YOLO! If you die, it’s your own fault!”
