AI showing signs of self-preservation and humans should be ready to pull plug, says pioneer Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio warns against granting legal rights to cutting-edge technology

I'm not sure what world I live in anymore. A mainstream, reputable, newspaper is dedicating bandwidth to this nonsense. And in turn, the opinions expressed in the article appear to be from reputable and knowledgable people.

AI is not conscious.

I got my 9 YO an "old fashioned" mp3 player that you need to manually download songs to by plugging it in to laptop. I have mp3's on a shared NAS drive. Whats the best (windows) software for letting her browse and download songs to the player, like its 2001?!

All this talk about AI, and I'm struggling to get Microsoft Customer Insights Journey to send the same message to a push notification and to a custom API endpoint. The AI's got nothin. I got nothin. What you got? #AI #microsoft #omniwhat #challenge

But what happens when you hit a problem it can't help you with? I mean, as a kid, you just have to trust it.
I'm conflicted, as it would be great in 80% of cases, but what about that 20%?

This is good. Now if you could recreate it with more of a Spectrum flavour, without it descending into loading screen screeching, I would be truely impressed. 😅🤘 Bleep Bloop.

Every so often you come across something/someone that just blows your mind. I used to generate ray traced caustics in Mental Ray, very slowly, some 20 years ago. The complexity that has been tamed here to do it in realtime is outstanding blog.oimo.io/2025/01/09/d...

There needs to be a new word invented (preferably one of those long concatenated German words) that describes the feeling when a Project Manager assigns you a Jira ticket that has no description, and you've never seen it before, and continually asks you when it will be completed. #tech #dev #agile

It would be great if you could provide some use-case and definition of what you mean by BFF. I've worked in this area, so I'm interested, but I fear my experience is biasing me towards thinking I know what context you are talking about.

It clearly needs to be more parallelised. Add a GPU. Trust me.

The show needs to come with a map. But the part where the innie and outie communicate via video recorder was an inspired concept. It felt like the whole show was a vehicle to arrive at that moment.

As a Brit, I don't understand why such a banal ad is getting traction?

Well, if we want to split hairs, it's hacktually about engineers spending countless days in meetings to understand requirements and then splitting those up into a thousand little pieces (JIRA tickets) and then failing to achieve the end goal and being left with a ton of tech debt, plus FTPing Excels

04.03.2025 10:42 👍 7 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 1

Nope. It's about getting the right information into an Excel spreadsheet, and then FTPing it somewhere 😜

Also turns out, Microsoft Family considers Chrome to be "unsafe" so explicitly blocks it being installed. 🤯 The 8yo was not impressed with me.

I had the opposite problem to this with my 8yo. I locked down the laptop so the school couldn't install random shit on it. The kid said she needed Chrome. I didn't believe her (pff, any modern browser will be fine, here's Brave). Turns out they do need Chrome, cause Google profile is required 😐

This is a weak article. I'm no LLM fanboy, but he's cherry picked use-cases he surely knows are weakspots for _any_ LLM. Also, no comparisons to other similar scale LLM's. Lazy reporting by a brilliant person is still lazy reporting.

@vcfederation.bsky.social This is a long shot..I have an old Turbo Pascal program I wrote in 1997 that uses a third party unit called "Vgraph". I originally found this on a floppy disk at a computer fair in the UK. It has now been lost to time, so I can no longer run my program. Does anyone know it?
