The problem was, shitty people frequently lacked self-awareness. But they were generally crystal-clear on the fact that others had opinions of them. Negative opinions they would love to attach to action, ranging from harsh words to terminal violence. Rather than bestir themselves to not be garbage, they tended to invest a lot of money and effort in protecting themselves from the consequences of their garbageness. It was, in his observation, the purpose of a government.
