Shalhoub once told that story on a podcast, while reiterating Levine was an absolute gentleman to everyone on the cast and crew. Levine said he did the "fuck you" thing to take power back in the audition room.
I love Ted Levine, and I love the story of how he got Monk. The network made him audition. He walks in, right before starting the read, he looks at all the execs and sneers, "Fuck you people." Then goes into the scene masterfully.
