The upcoming 250th anniversaries of our nation's founding, the Declaration of Independence and the pivotal Revolutionary War Battle of Sullivan's Island only six days before undoubtedly will raise awareness about our early history in a powerful way. It also should encourage Charleston leaders to take a more proactive approach to discovering our early history that has been buried underground, out of sight. Several city plans have recommended that the city do more regarding urban archaeology, and there has been some important progress. The city's Walled City Task Force has led successful efforts in researching and publicizing more about the late 17th and early 18th fortifications. The Charleston Museum' archaeologists, along with other voluntary archaeology work and digs required under the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act, have made significant contributions. too.
But more can and should be done. The Preservation Society of Charleston shares this view, and its CEO Brian Turner explained why during its winter member meeting on Thursday, which focused on urban archaeology. "This is an exploration of something more than pottery sherds and knick-knacks in the ground," Mr. Turner says. This is really a conversation of how we tell our story, how we tell the story of the people who shaped our city. Today's Post and Courier editorial on Charleston's need for an archaeology ordinance. Archaeology is a public resource that enriches and improves quality of life. Look to San Antonio for another great example of a city with a robust archaeology program. Preserve our past #SC #archaeology 🏺

hank you for contacting me with your comments and concerns about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I appreciate the opportunity to hear from you on this issue. ICE plays a vital role in protecting our nation and maintaining the integrity of our borders. We are fortunate to have hardworking ICE officers who put their lives on the line to protect Americans. The security of our country depends on brave men and women like these and we owe them a great deal.

While I support adopting certain reforms to ICE and Border Patrol, we must recognize that sanctuary city policies are the real problem leading to chaos. It is time to end these dangerous policies once and for all. As the Senate considers this issue, I will keep your comments in mind.

As your United States Senator, my primary job is to understand and represent the interests of all South Carolinians. The opportunity to hear from you about the issues confronting our nation is not only essential to representative democracy, but allows me to better serve the people of South Carolina. We will not see eye-to-eye on every issue; however, I promise to always give your concerns the consideration they deserve.

I encourage you to visit my website β€” http://lgraham.senate.gov β€” as it will have information on the most recent activities before the U.S. Senate. You can also sign up for our e-mail newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages which will provide the latest information and updates on the major issues facing our state and our nation.

Thank you again for contacting me. I truly appreciate the opportunity to hear from you and am honored to have the opportunity to represent your interests in the U.S. Senate.

Sincerely,
