Whenever I see the GP I always make sure to address them as “Mr” rather than “Dr”. It’s a small but important way of showing them where they stand in the academic pecking order.
Those of us who did bother to get a PhD should not see our titles devalued in this way.

Becoming a father again - Abigail
Wherein I consider how the arrival of a second child is different to the first.
The arrival of my second child was not a revolutionary occurrence. This partly explains why I have ninety-five photos of Damian below the age of two, but only three of Abigail.

Top tips for organising a funeral:
- Bargain with the undertakers. Heavy discounts on caskets, flowers etc. are available for the persistent.
- Invest in a warm buffet. A cold buffet will give impression that the deceased was tight-fisted.
-Be aware of the possibility of funeral gate-crashers.

It was rotten luck that my son, Damian, was born shortly after the release of the film The Omen.

Becoming a father
Wherein I recount the joyful arrival of my son being slightly undermined by an accidental association with the Antichrist.
“Here, you can see your son being born – have a look,” he said. Reader, I did so, and in all honesty, neither my sexual relations with Pauline, nor my attitude towards public transport ever fully recovered.

Life on the front line of academia
Wherein I dispel myths about the supposedly cozy life of a university lecturer
He said "you couldn’t make an omelette without breaking eggs”. I pressed him to point out which of us in the room were eggs and which were not in this scenario. He replied by saying, rather pointedly, that “Egg-heads would certainly count as eggs.”

Unpromising beginnings
Wherein I wonder if my birthdate was some sort of bad joke
Being born on April Fool's Day led to many unwanted pranks. As a teenager, I was gifted a large envelope stuffed full of banknotes; unfortunately, they were Hungarian pengö, which following a period of hyper-inflation, had become completely worthless.

My sexual awakening
Wherein I describe my early sexual encounters and how I came to lose my virginity
"Here I was sitting in the corridor of a shabby townhouse in a mediocre Welsh city, masturbating disconsolately, while a rotund Iranian looked on."

The Wilderness Years (part 1)
Wherein I recount my Christmas Day spent at the local homeless shelter
"I learned that Alan had been married and divorced three times, Demi-John’s wife had left him due to his alcoholism and Larkey’s wife had disappeared mysteriously just before he was imprisoned for murder."

My parents
Wherein I describe the loving relationship between my impractical father, Edmund, and my German mother, Eva.
My parents were very fond of each other, even if this was often expressed across large geographical distances or long periods of tense silence.

If my memoirs are published and no one reads them do they still have an impact?
Wherein I explain why my memoirs are very interesting and important via a famous philosophical question.
My memoirs offer episodes and commentary other, more egotistical or deluded writers, might have omitted. I do not shy away from topics such as sex, drugs or being of above average height.
