(He/Any) General engineer. No, more general than that. Angry we aren’t caring for each other more, trying to fix it.

Hi everyone! My name is Andrea LaFlamme and I'm running to unseat Susan Collins in the US Senate. I'm a feminist public health professor and the ONLY candidate in this race who has worked in education, municipal health, and as an elected union leader. (1/2)

Website design sure has evolved. Even ten years ago I’d have never imagined a thing of such beauty.

If he can at all avoid taking a clear position on a critical issue, he generally will.

That would be all well and good if LLMs were being presented to the public as random word generators.

Of course most school shooters are actually white nationalists with a history of violent misogyny, so it’s critical we not talk about that and come up with someone to scapegoat.

a cartoon monkey wearing a pirate hat is playing drums in a band Alt: a claymation monkey drummer wearing a pirate hat lets out a pained sigh, plays a rimshot in a resentful manner, and rolls his eyes and stares contemptuously at someone unseen.

Good thread. Sizeable number of Republicans grew to hate the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan not because of the reasons they claimed ("forever wars!", "waste of money!"), but because they didn't sate their bloodlust enough. They wanted wholesale slaughter of civilian populations.

I'm never gonna forgive yall for taking away all the silly fun videos on the internet. Now I have to scrutinize every damn thing to make sure its not some kind of slop. All the video based social media is sus. I can't scroll for my giggles anymore. I hate it so much.

And in the other direction, the cultural wave that elected trump was based on years of AM radio and cable news feeding their audiences a continuous drip of anger-inducing anecdotes about their fellow Americans cheating the system and getting something at the listener’s expense.

very aspect of life in this country is designed so that people do not form bonds or relationships with other people, it's wild to watch in action. Never seen divide and conquer applied this rigorously to a domestic population that is not under foreign occupation

In the interactions I’ve seen, people making reactionary arguments tend to be people who can’t engage on the substance of anything, and just think everyone’s being mean to them. Or, they just have bad ethics that don’t belong in a liberal society.

At this point I’m willing to say there’s a pattern of people who *do* espouse reactionary beliefs here turning out to be either incapable of reasoning and substantively responding to arguments, or not having a universal idea of human rights to begin with.

And several of those occupations certainly are useful work.

On AI and the golem Recently I, like a lot of people who make their living by creating things, have been thinking a lot about so-called AI. I have been forced to do this because so many companies have been stealing th…

What the "AI is literally magic" people forget is that magic was literally the Torment Nexus meme of the past! It was a cautionary tale! (this one is from @goingmedieval.bsky.social and one of my favorites)

It’s the security state perpetuating its power by ensuring there’s always enough chaos and violence to justify its centrality.

Another consideration, important for all robotaxis but especially for paratransit use, is whether the car can detect and handle a medical emergency.

They’re undoubtedly being subsidized now, but there’s a strong case for public subsidy as a paratransit program, and we could compare the costs with existing paratransit.

Personally I think that America should make itself into a friend to democracy everywhere

Yes even when that means getting a government that's less friendly to us personally than the dictators we're currently propping up

Before the Korean coup attempt I would’ve thought suggestions like this are pretty out there, but the more I imagine leaders with existing right-wing beliefs and a sheltered existence being exposed to whoever’s most convincing in their YouTube feed, the more I think the world’s in danger.

If you haven't seen this before, you should take this moment to watch this 2003 speech from Senator Byrd of West Virginia on the Iraq War.

I think... the sentiments will feel familiar.
