They started with their verdict and worked back to find justification. Lord Hodge was also responsible for requiring a "moratorium" on appointing gay ministers in the Church of Scotland. He's deeply conservative.

The media answers to the establishment on anything perceived to be 'an existential threat', and that was very much an existential threat.

They took down Nicola Sturgeon because her de-facto referendum was also an existential threat.

Private Eye column titled, "Oh My, Omid!"

Article begins:

Meanwhile one of the comics criticised for appearing at the Riyadh comedy festival, Omid Djalili, took to the pages of the Guardian to defend himself from charge of allowing himself to become a mouthpiece for the Saudi regime.

It was not the most convincing argument. "As an international performer I like to connect with local artistes," Djalili sniffed. "As a Middle Eastern comedian I am of the view that a blanket boycott tends to dismiss and patronise ordinary Saudis, often those eager for exposure to diverse culture. There's a saying in the Middle East: 'It's not about what you hear, it's about being here.'"

And indeed, that is a saying in the Middle East. Specifically, it is the slogan of a recently launched campaign by, er, the Saudi government's Tourism Development Fund.

Article ends.

Reminder that Omid Djalili isn't just another bloke with Twitter brainworms, rather he's a paid up propagandist. There are reasons you don't see him moaning about Brits jailed in Dubai for posting war footage on social media. Thousands & thousands of reasons.

The point is just to make people angry. It's the medium they use, it doesn't matter what provokes the anger, as long as people are made angry. That's how the Daily Mail has always worked, tabloids generally.

Revealed: how the UK’s powerful right-wing think tanks and Conservative MPs work together The Institute of Economic Affairs, accused of offering US donors access to government ministers, is among right-wing think tanks meeting monthly. Conservative MPs have attended, too.

We don't emphasise enough that the LGB Alliance is part of the Brexit machine that pushed blatant lies to the public.

The tide never really changed that much. A handful of politicians lobby groups, funded by wealthy conservative people, *saturated* the media & politics with lawfare and fear-mongering. They're already starting to wear thin as the tedious liars they are.

Keir Starmer thinks standing against violent oppression and the indiscriminate murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent people is completely intolerable

I think a former human rights lawyer being this morally compromised is completely intolerable but what do I know?

After a long day in committee, I’m feeling utterly revived by seeing this great clip of @greenpartyhan.bsky.social making her maiden speech in Parliament.

Her voice is so very, very needed.

Don’t be a stepping stone for war In the face of escalating war, Hannah Brock Womack shares how to keep pushing back against the idea that conflict is inevitable.

"This war was not inevitable. It was a calculated choice by people with power who believe that might is right. Our experience of God teaches us that this is wrong."

@peace-campaigns.quaker.org.uk explains why we need to keep saying no to war. www.quaker.org.uk/blog/don-t-b...

β€œShe’s the exception, I am the rule.”

Such articulate cutting through of the nonsense around puberty blockers and eg Keira Bell’s detransitioning from Stephanie Lynnette on GMB this morning. It is also a refreshing relief to see a trans person actually being allowed to speak for once!

100,000 trans people & allies fill central London for Trans Pride.

Mainstream media: nothing

Thousands of trans people & allies fill Wembley Arena for pro-trans gig with massive names like Sophie Ellis-Bextor & Sugarbabes.

Mainstream media: nothing.

This is what extreme media bias looks like.

I like to imagine a hirsute stiff upper-lip, trembling furiously as a clenched fist pounds down on an old Chesterfield desk.

I mean, if the Express say there's "fury" then there must be a lot of furious people.

It's theatre. Similarly with Blair and the Iraq war, millions of people gathered to protest a war that was based on obviously ludicrous 'evidence'.

It made absolutely no difference, and it was always going to be futile. It did open my eyes to the illusion of democracy, certainly in geopolitics.

He seems a genuinely decent person, but he's not getting a complete free pass on this, since he worked with the Sun, which is an error of judgement (admittedly, 13 years ago).

Tabloids are known for twisting things and being dishonest, the Sun maybe even worse than the Daily Mail.

So his account of it seems really quite plausible.

Trans Facts Preamble: the β€œdebate” is toxic.Sex is not binary.Gender is (at least partly) a social construct, but that doesn’t mean it’s not real. This is not a dispute between scientist…

It is fascinating to me that people get so hung up on insisting that sex is binary.

Like, it's not necessary for any specific attack on trans rights, and it's very obviously not a scientific belief, but people seem *really* invested in this.

Divergent Identities in Iran and the Appropriation of Trans Bodies IntroductionIn Gender Trouble, Judith Butler contests the framework of a gender binary, as upheld in the popular imagination, for assuming a β€œcausal relation among sex, gender, and desire.”Judith Butl...

The way the theocratic state of Iran deals with non-binary identities is telling. It's ideologically driven by religious conservatism. Just like it is in Iran.
