Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Oh, your plucky heroine disguised as a boy to hide her identity? Yeah, you left him unattended for 15 minutes and I told him about testosterone. Where is he now? Damn I dunno he took off like a pack of wolves was chasing him, you might have to find a new plot now.

I love queerplatonic relationships. Put them in everything I write. What if we'd go to the ends of the earth for each other & our bond transcended the limits of language & we resisted any attempt to define us while saving each other again & again. Do NOT separate

Whenever I finish an outline, I'm always left with a couple plot points I'm not sure where to place. Only by writing the thing can I test out what the best flow and order of events will be. When you have lots of moving parts, you need to actually move them to figure it out!

Poem entitled "Gray Fog" by Sara Teasdale

A fog drifts in, the heavy laden
Cold white ghost of the sea--
One by one the hills go out,
The road and the pepper-tree.

I watch the fog float in at the window
With the whole world gone blind,
Everything, even my longing, drowses,
Even the thoughts in my mind.

I put my head on my hands before me,
There is nothing left to be done or said,
There is nothing to hope for, I am tired,
And heavy as the dead.

A group of six nature valentines. A picture of a bog with pitcher plants, with text saying "Our love is like a bog. Built up over time, resistant to decay, deeply interesting to just a small number of people." A yellow slime mold stretching out and exploring. "Our love is like a slime mold. Collaborative, complex, at times unnerving to behold." A piece of limestone with a small trilobite in the corner. "Our love is like limestone. Layered, useful for many purposes, shaped by the friends we met along the way." A ring-billed gull with a french fry on a beach. "Our love is like a ring-billed gull. Abundant, found in North America, sometimes sustained by french fries." An Atlantic horseshoe crab walking on the sand. "Our love is like a horseshoe crab. Tough, timeless, unrelated to true crabs." A drawing of the phosphorus cycle, with arrows connecting various parts of a scene, including algae and fish and a farm and a river and a forest. "Our love is like the phosphorus cycle. Important, really hard to draw."

They are counting on you giving up.

Doesn't mean you can't be afraid, angry, or both, but spreading hopelessness is spreading inaction in the face if fascism narratives and that's euthanasia for resistance.

I have not been able to write stuff I intend to publish for over a month. But I've been writing for fun to get those muscles back into shape, and trying to not let capitalism make me feel guilty for doing art for fun instead of a goal of eventual profit.

My mental health has been pretty rough for the past 6 months. Depression and anxiety have kept me from doing much of anything, especially writing. I'm relieved to say I'm slowly breaking through the flareup. Horror, as always, has helped me identify the sources of fears and cope with them. πŸ•ΈοΈπŸ–€

Here’s why you shouldn’t pull your punches as a writer:

A big part of the appeal of a book is how dedicated the author is to their idea.

That crackling energy only comes from compulsion, the true driver of creativity.

Restrain it at your own peril.
