@rbreich.bsky.social If you are still in Berkeley, I'd love to take you for a cup of coffee and pick your brain on some of the ideas from your Youtube channel and in your writing. I'm approaching this as a layman but looking for insights on where to put my energy addressing systemic problems.

How a Major Democratic Law Firm Ended Up Bowing to Trump (Gift Article)
Paul Weiss was targeted by an executive order from President Trump. Its chairman, who had worked against Mr. Trump during his first term, then went to the Oval Office and cut a deal.
In a post Trump world, I'd really like to see the American public collectively agree that people like Brad Karp don't get to walk away saying they weren't part of grift. They are enablers and rhetoric about standing up for the principles that the United States was founded on are empty promises.

Iβm posting this message from a Mac client that Claude Code wrote for me. I wrote none of the code, just guided the agent along, reporting errors in the build and asking them to be fixed & requesting additional features to be added. 25 minutes on the clock since starting with an empty directory.

The lack of empathy for the impact of tariffs against Canada enacted is embarrassing as an American. This whole statement reeks of American Exceptionalism and a rejection of free market principles. Americans should begin boycotting Kentucky Bourbon in solidarity with our neighbors to the north.

A gorgeous portrait of the White House entirely aflame, the smoke billowing and the flames lighting up the night sky. It sparks deep patriotic ferver. This is what democracy looks like.
Also there's a white button with blue text below the portrait. The text reads "Learn more" and if clicked it takes you to the menu of a local brewhouse.
If you're wondering about the vibe in Canada right now, I just got served this ad for a brewhouse that is just a portrait of the White House being burned down. No text, just a bigass picture of the White House burning and a link directly to their menu lolol

The Return of Digg, a Star of Web 2.0 (Gift Article)
Two decades after creating Digg, a community-focused social message board, Kevin Rose is reviving the site and teaming up with a founder of Reddit.
It's somehow oddly comforting to me that Digg is coming back. It may just be nostalgia for a time that seemed more grounded in optimism, but I could use a bit of that these days.

It's pretty disgusting that people are saying that Zelensky should have approached Trump differently, taking a more sycophantic approach. Why is Trump treated like he has no agency or responsibility to consider his own behavior vis-a-vis what's in the best interests of the United States?

Donald Trump shares bizarre AI-generated video of 'Trump Gaza'

This is a new low. I don't think it needs any further qualification. It's not that it was created (any troll can do that), but that the POTUS would share it with the world?!?

The Incompetence of DOGE Is a Feature, Not a Bug
A series of mistakes by DOGE shows just how arbitrary and destructive this slash-and-burn strategy can get.
"Itβs a familiar Silicon Valley mindset, the reason startups are forever reinventing a bus, or a bodega, or mail. Itβs the implacable certainty that if youβre smart at one thing you must be smart at all of the things." www.wired.com/story/doge-i...

FYI already planned buyouts are next up at the @washingtonpost because they are as hamhanded at management as it looks. My assumption is they are doing this ass backwards in hopes people would leave rather than be paid out.

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio calls Jan 6 Officer Michael Fanone a βcowardβ for putting him behind bars

One one hand, I want to be optimistic and say it hasn't gone that far. OTOH, Trump freeing the Jan 6 rioters and emboldening them further makes it hard to ignore that there seems to be a loyal army of thugs that Trump is encouraging that look like 1930 - 1940s Germany

Then true conservatives need to realign themselves away from the MAGA movement and take the hit for a few cycles that will come with it, possibly losing power for a time. A Tea Party 2.0 if you will to realign conservative interests with preservation of the principles of freedom and democracy.

I think that conversation really matters, because it's worth examining whether or not the perception that both sides are trying to govern with a desire to preserve the principles that the United States was founded on. Dispelling that notion may be the first step in restoring balance.

What party, when in control of the levers of government, has any incentive to limit its power?
If we want to talk about "how we got here", can we examine which party has laid the groundwork to undermine the checks & balances on the system for decades, waiting for an opportunity to pull the trigger?

My daughter's school has houses (i.e. - cohorts a la Harry Potter) for K - 8 that just started today and she asked me if that means we need to move. Poor kid, she'd been chewing that over all night and stressing out about it.

Software teams get caught in a vicious circle where the definition of done isn't documented before kicking off a project. One-off asks keep getting brought in and the finish line keeps moving, and teams lose sight of the problem they set out to solve. The dopamine hit never comes for them.

Defining "done" ahead of time is hard to teach to teams who haven't operated in that way. It requires a lot of patience, hands-on coaching, and asking and answering questions. Despite the uphill battle, I have yet to see that effort not pay off in improved velocity and developer happiness.
